NATIONAL VOLUNTEERS WEEK: SKYE SPENCE
Skye Spence is what we call a “career volunteer.” Regardless of the club, sport and community group, Skye makes it her mission to help out!
After moving to Darwin three years ago, Skye’s son Alex stepped into Cadet 12 at the Darwin Karting Association, and immediately, Skye and her husband Allan saw some gaps in the volunteer team. They quickly jumped into action, to make sure that drivers weren’t missing out on being behind the wheel because they were filling an official’s position.
“I love the working bees and running the grid, and I’m thinking about learning how to become the Clerk of Course,” she says, “but I’ve loved motorsport since I was a kid, so I’ve always been a volunteer, and my husband is on the committee, while trying to help Alex with his racing as well. So, it’s a bit crazy on race weekends, but we love it!”
Thankyou Skye! It’s legends like you that keep the wheels turning in Australian Karting!
Every Kart club could use more helpers, so if you’d like to volunteer, talk to your local club about ways you can get involved.
As part of National Volunteers week, we want to acknowledge the amazing people across the nation that keep the karting wheels turning. Without you, we simply can’t go racing!
