It is with genuine shock we learn of the sudden passing of karting commentator and identity, Matthew Payne.
Over the years, Matt had established himself as “The Voice of Karting”, but was also involved with other media and commentary roles in the sport.
I first worked with Matt when we were both at KartOz Magazine in the early 2000s and will never forget our shared trackside commentary at the awesome Pro-Nats event at Eastern Creek. I’ll also never forget his quirky sense of humour and love of a good red.
Matt had been the series commentator for the Australian Kart Championship for many years, had previously held a similar role for the Rotax Pro Tour, and was still doing other commentary gigs, such as Ipswich’s live streams.
But the race tracks won’t sound the same now.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the sudden passing of long-time karting commentator Matt Payne aged 46.
For more than 20 years, Matt has been the voice of Australian karting, providing media and commentary services at events across the country. Through his work as a commentator and journalist, he witnessed the development of countless young drivers who have gone on to successful careers in motorsport, and he took genuine pride in helping tell their stories and celebrate their achievements. His passion for karting, his knowledge of the sport, and his familiar voice will be deeply missed by competitors, officials and families alike.

On behalf of everyone at Karting Australia and the broader karting community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his mother Helen, his brother Daniel, and the extended Payne family and friends during this very difficult time.

Matt played an instrumental role in the successes of the Rotax Pro Tour – he wasn’t just the voice of the series, he was part of the IKD Team.
Whether it was an early morning track-side coffee, a mid week phone call or a post track day dinner, we shared plenty of laughs, ideas and memories.
Matt is the voice you all know and love to hear echoing through the pits at kart tracks across the country & his passing will definitely be felt far and wide.
