Mick Booth practices what he preaches.
As the Karting Australia (NSW) State Officials Coordinator, Mick sets the example of keeping the wheels turning by travelling all over the state with the express purpose of training and preparing our karting officials to be more effective and enjoy their role.
“We prioritise equipping our officials to handle all the different situations, but not all volunteering roles in Karting are intense. It’s a wide spectrum of roles with different levels of responsibility, so there’s pretty much a role for anybody and everybody,” he says.
The semi-retired woodwork teacher has a passion for education, but his introduction to karting through his son’s racing didn’t last long.
“We got into the sport in around 2007, and I bought a kart to race as well as I always had a penchant for motorsport, but even though our son didn’t continue on, I loved both the racing and the volunteering in the club as well,” Mick said.
“You can blame Helen Voysey and John Martin for keeping me here,” he laughs, “because they took me under their wing and nurtured me to give me the skills to do the job.”
Thankyou Mick! It’s legends like you that keep the wheels turning in Australian Karting!
Every Kart club could use more helpers, so if you’d like to volunteer, talk to your local club about ways you can get involved.
As part of National Volunteers week, we want to acknowledge the amazing people across the nation that keep the karting wheels turning. Without you, we simply can’t go racing!
