Hugo Garraway was back on circuit over the weekend for the 5th round of the Victorian Golden Power Series at the Rochester Kart Club. Garraway was hot off a podium at the recent Australasian Kart Titles and was looking for more silverware. Hugo had a strong field of 20 drivers in the KA4 Junior Heavy field and he was ready to do battle across the 2 days!
Garraway utilised his 2 practice sessions the hit the track for qualifying looking to get himself towards the front of the grid. The Garraway Group sponsored entry was quick out of the box and straight into the top 10 drivers. Hugo was pushing hard at the edge of the top 5 and trying to make his way into the top 5 battle. Garraway stopped the clock in 5th position and was looking to be right in the top 5 battle!
Heat 1 was on Saturday afternoon and Garraway got just the start he needed moving up into the top 4 on the opening lap. The Tecno Karts Victoria – Country Kart Spares driver was in position 4 for the first half of the race and closing in on the battle for 3rd spot. Hugo tried everything he could and got within 3 tenths of 3rd position by the chequered flag. Garraway crossed the line in position 4 and was looking to continue his move forward.
Heat 2 was on Sunday morning and Hugo was looking to continue his positive results. Garraway had his race unfortunately end before it really got started when he was nudged off the circuit on lap 1 at turn 2. This had The Garraway Group backed driver starting out of position 11 for the 3rd heat.
Garraway was ready to try and rebound from position 11 after a DNF result in heat 2 and got a lightening start moving up 4 positions in the opening lap. Hugo made the move into position 6 by mid race and was chasing after the top 5 drivers. Garraway had quite a margin to catch so crossed the line in 6th position, making up 5 spots across the 10 laps!
Position 8 was the starting spot for Hugo for the 15-lap final and he was hoping to come away with a top 5 result. The Garraway Group backed entry was once again able to nail the start by moving up 4 positions and being straight into 4th spot. Garraway got as high as 3rd throughout the race and was battle for the podium positions. After a hectic and crazy final lap, Hugo was able to emerge on the podium in 3rd position overall!
Hugo’s father Russell spoke post weekend on his young son’s weekend. “I thought the weekend was going to be a write off after heat 2. To Hugo’s credit he never gave in and drove really well to get himself back up into the podium battle. To come away with 3rd spot after a DNF is an awesome result”.
Garraway will be taking his place in the Tecno Karts Victoria – Country Kart Spares team for the remainder of the 2022 season!
