The man who built the awesome international-spec go kart track at Raleigh passed away last month.
Chris Piggott founded Raleigh International Raceway in 1988, a year after the Raleigh Kart Club was formed.
Built on family land, he had been developing the facility since 1982. A 500m dirt kart track was built in 1985, which was turned to bitumen in 1987. Further development and track extensions enabled international competition to take place and the venue hosted multiple CIK Oceania Championships that attracted the top teams and drivers from overseas and Australia.
For many years, a wide range of other types of motorsport events continued to take place at Raleigh as Piggott continued to promote grassroots motorsport at his venue until his passing.
International commentator Ian Salvestrin wrote a piece about the circuit in 2019 – read that HERE.
A more detail obituary can be read on the Motorsport Australia website.
