F100 Winter Cup Wrap Up

by Paul Rodgers

Grey skies and a wet track greeted drivers like many Winter Cup events in years gone by. It looked like it was going to be one of those wet/dry days where a tyre choice could make or break your day.

A red hot field of 14 F100 drivers fronted up with a huge amount of experience and success between them ready to tackle Geelong’s short track.

2 lucky drivers started the day with a win before a wheel was turned with 2 random prize draws. Thank you to Jackson by Design (who also supplied the trophy boards) and the Geelong Kart Club for their support and supplying these prizes!

Qualifying

The track was wet so drivers had to adapt quickly to find the grip and post a fast time, Ryan Aitken getting the job done jumping straight to the top. The top 3 covered by only 2 tenths in a tricky session.

Heat 1

The rain was holding off but the track was drying very slowly so drivers remained on wets on what was now a very greasy and slippery track for heat 1. Aitken almost pulled out a 1 second lead but Jason Pringle hunted him down, they raced side by side to the chequered flag split by five hundredths of a second at the line in favour of Aitken! Greg Ritter had a great run to finish 3rd after starting 8th.

Heat 2

The first race of the day on slicks saw a messy start losing quite a few drivers lap 1 turn 1. The top 4 broke away and battled for the lead with Daniel Richert coming through the pack from 11th and looking very strong to take the win. Anthony Mrhar kept it clean to take 2nd with Ritter again coming through from 8th to 3rd.

Final

The skies were threatening as drivers headed out for the final and even some small drops of rain on the roll around laps but it blew over and remained dry. The first lap saw us lose a number of karts in separate incidents but at the front Richert and Aitken had broken away. The gap was almost out to 1 second by mid race of the 14 lap final but Aitken chipped away at it and started reeling Richert in. However, Richert managed the gap well to deny Aitken a challenge taking the win by 3 tenths of a second. Mrhar ran a solid 3rd place to complete the podium. Tasmanian Jackson Evans kept it in the top 5 all day to come home 4th with Matt Wall coming from the rear to finish in 5th.

3 Anthony Mrhar +6.328
4 Jackson Evans +9.288

A huge thank you to the Geelong Kart Club for putting F100 on as an additional feature class at their club day and letting us use the “Winter Cup” name – it was good to see it back even in this small capacity. The feedback from the drivers has all been positive so far including many comments regarding the facility improvements that have gone on since Retro Karting Australia last visited Geelong in 2023.

There is still plenty of F100 action to come in the back half of 2025 with Retro Karting Australia:

  • Oceania Series Round 2 – Mildura – July 18/19
  • Oceania Series Round 3 – Geelong – August 17
  • Retro Karting Australia Nationals – Puckapunyal – Nov 14/15/16
