Kiwi Report: AKC Round 3

KIWI KARTING DUO FIND THE GOING TOUGH IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Kiwi kart duo Ryan Wood and Liam Sceats found the going tough at the third round of this year’s SP Tools Australian Kart Championship presented by Castrol Edge (AKC) at Monarto in South Australia over the weekend.

Wood, the newly crowned New Zealand Rotax DD2 class champion, qualified 14th out of the 34-strong Iame X30 Senior grid, but a dnf in the third heat saw him start the fourth from P19 and the Final (after finishing 21st in the last heat race) from P18.

Though he was quickly up to P9 by the end of the first lap the young Wellingtonian was shuffled back to P14 on the second lap then P15 on the fourth before beginning a recovery drive which brought him up as high as P12 again before being classified P14.

After three rounds that sees him in P9 in the overall series standings with two more rounds to go.

Liam Sceats from Auckland, now currently both the North Island and New Zealand #1 in the new Vortex ROK DVS Junior class, had a similar run in the KA2 (Vortex ROK DVS) category at Monarto.

He qualified 12th quickest (out of a field of 30 of Australia’s top Juniors) but after an event-best sixth place in the second heat race, dnfed the third, putting him back to P12 on the gird for the fourth heat race (in which he finished 14th) and on P14 for the Final.

A frantic first lap saw him elbowed back from that place to P29 but he was soon back up to P14 and by lap 5 a race high of P11. From there he was briefly pushed back two places but made them up again and was classified 14th for the race and round. A result which sees him 18th in the class series points standings (out of 38) after three of the five rounds.

There is now a break in the AKC schedule until the fourth round, set to be held at Emerald in far northern Queensland over the July 20/21 weekend.
