An American company has established Foundation Wheel Development with the purpose of manufacturing steering wheels targeting the youth racer.
FWD steering wheels are purpose built to match the body size and kart size for Kid Kart and Cadet drivers. The wheels have a smaller grip circumference along with a slightly smaller overall height and width.

“Most Kid Karts and all Cadets come with a standard wheel found on full size karts,” stated Kyle Heckman of Foundation Wheel Development.
“A five year old kid who has never driven anything before does not have the knowledge or experience to communicate that their wheel grip is too big and that they can’t grip well. They take what they’re given and learn how to adapt, because it’s what is available.
“Having different wheel options that grow with one’s hand should allow young racers to adapt to new machines with added comfort and confidence.”
There are currently two styles available. The FWD Navigator is a three-spoke flat top steering wheel while the FWD Pilot is a four-spoke flat bottom wheel. Each are available in two sizes, the Rookie model (20.5mm diameter grip for 5-8 year olds) and the Pro model (25.4mm diameter grip for 9-12 year olds).
A third wheel is in development, which will be a three-spoke, dual flat steering wheel labeled the FWD Captain.
