Butcher’s Roller Coaster

A “serious roller coaster ride” was how UK-based Australian Sean Butcher described the Rotax MAX Challenge International Trophy at Le Mans on the weekend, estimating he made over 125 passes in the heat races.

The KR-Sport/Kosmic driver didn’t get to set a time in Senior MAX qualifying, but a series of huge drives in the heats, where he managed to get into the top ten on each occasion, ranked him 12th going into the Super Heat.

Further progress was made here before a mechanical DNF dropped him to a grid 26 start in the final.

The final was another fine showing, manoeuvring his way up to the leaders, but contact while battling for a podium dropped him to 11th over the line (awarded 9th after penalties).

“We take so many positives away from the weekend, the main one being still in one piece!” he confessed on socials.

Dan Holland Racing’s Macauley Bishop took the win in a British lockout of the Senior MAX podium.

New Zealand’s Maxim Kirwan made it through to the Junior MAX final, classified 35th.
