Some of New Zealand’s top level international karters have been appointed to a Competitor Representative Committee to advise and work with the governing body on a range of competition issues.
KartSport New Zealand’s announcement on the matter is below:
KartSport New Zealand is pleased to announce the confirmed inaugural line up of its new Competitor Representative Committee, with a total of eight people joining the team.
The team includes an incredible wealth of knowledge of both the past and present, plus an eye-watering list of championship wins throughout the world as drivers and in assisting roles. The initial team includes:
- Josh Hart, Waikato/Manawatu
- Matt Kinsman, Auckland
- Matt Hamilton, Canterbury
- Ryan Urban, Auckland
- Daniel Bray, Auckland
- Chris Cox, Canterbury
These six will be joined by KartSport New Zealand’s Academy Director Tiffany Chittenden, plus respected Race Official Johnny Bassick. The addition of the latter two will help ensure initiatives and guidance can be passed on to the future of the sport both on track and off and that any rule related matters will be practically suitable.
As mentioned in the initial press release, this team has been selected by KartSport New Zealand to set the appropriate trajectory, with future committee members to be nominated in years to come. An important matter not emphasized in the initial press release was the requirement for the committee to have knowledge of overseas karting environments. With kiwi karters connected more than ever before with international events, setting our drivers up to achieve overseas and installing the right driving standards early are crucial, while also creating an overall greater standard here in New Zealand.
The new committee will hold its first meeting in mid-August, with each member charged with bringing discussion items for the agenda regarding areas of the sport they feel need strongest focus, within the overall objectives of the group. Some of the objectives include, but aren’t limited to
- Improving/setting driving standards
- Developing and implementing greater passing rules
- Penalties discussion – when they’re given / levels and types
- General behavior at track and away
- Further education of officials – including direction to the new officiating model
- Education of DSAs – how the sport builds this role
- Officiating through the event levels – what’s needed for Club Day, Regional and National
- Culture – leaving issues at events, encouraging drivers to give back to the sport etc.
While it will take some time for the group to meet, identify key issues to focus on and begin progress towards initiatives and solutions, KartSport New Zealand looks forward to updating the sport over time.
