RIP Sylvia Stania

Tributes have flowed from the karting fraternity with the sad news of the passing of former driver, valued official, coordinator & volunteer (over many many years), karting mum and grandmother, Sylvia Stania.

She passed away on Wednesday April 18 after a short illness.

Sylvia and Paul Stania. They celebrated their 59th Wedding Anniversary earlier this year.

Sylvia started in the sport with her husband Paul while working overseas. She officiated at all levels of the sport, from club racing to state and national championships and was a Life Member of Karting Victoria. More recently, she was heavily involved with the Geelong Kart Club, helping foster the growth of grass roots club racing.

“She was the kind assassin in the stewards room” posted Rotax Grand Final winner Lee Mitchener. “I still remember the first pink slip I got from her. She made it more educational than a punishment.”

Geelong Kart Club – With great sadness we have to report on the passing of Geelong Kart Club Chief Steward Sylvia Stania. Sylvia was one of the most respected people to ever take part in Australian Karting having been involved as a high level official, competitor, karting mum and grandmother. Words cannot express our thanks to Sylvia helping out the Geelong Kart Club when we needed her the most. She had so much wisdom and understanding of everything karting. Sylvia passed away Wednesday evening and at this time we are thinking of Paul, Jason, Amy, Oliver and Eden. We are going to miss you very much and you will never be forgotten. There will be one minute silence observed at our May 5th event in memory of Sylvia. Rest In peace.

Lee Mitchener – She was the kind assassin in the stewards room. Always fair but never outside of the rules! I still remember the first pink slip (infringement) I got from her. She made it more educational than a punishment, that’s just how she was. And there were plenty of lessons learned from that day on! She was what karting really needed. And what really made karting great.
