Despite all the action the team contested in throughout the month of August, Mathew Basso Racing continued their busy schedule, returning to the Numurkah Karting Circuit for the 2023 Australasian Titles. Having shown excellent speed as of recent, both driver and team were focused on taking out their third Australasian Title in as many years!
Confident upon their return to the circuit the team dominated earlier this year, Mathew started the weekend by going fastest and second fastest in the opening practice sessions, before waltzing his way to pole position by a handy 0.074 over national competitor, Joseph Belardo. It appeared early in the weekend that it would be a battle of the class supremos, both Basso and Belardo with several tenths over the rest of the field.
Mathew made light work of the heats, displaying the full extent of his driving prowess as he carved up the field almost with ease – storming to three heat wins and as many fastest laps.
As the final loomed, Mathew and his Team were hopeful of coming home with a strong result having capitalised on their excellent qualifying and extending their winning margins throughout the heats.
Lights out and KA3 Junior Heavy were racing with several karts scrapping for position – but Basso bolted! In truly dominant fashion, Basso broke the hearts of his rivals before they even reached the halfway mark, crushing the opposition to win by two seconds at the end of the 20-lap race, with a green light to chequered flag win, claiming the 2023 Australasian Title!
Further to this, Mathew was also voted the Commentator’s Driver of the Weekend, quoting: “Basso tapped into a whole new level of excellency this weekend; storming his way to pole position, clean sweeping the heats and final with fastest laps in every race – astonishing given the high calibre of drivers in the category throughout the event”.
Ecstatic with the result, Mathew had this to say when asked about winning his third Australasian Title: “What a super weekend of racing. I’m three from three for Australasian Title wins in a row now, so I am stoked with another title and the #1 red plate victory!”
