NSW Championship Podium for Cohen

Reece Cohen took on another KZ2 major title over the weekend at the Karting Australia New South Wales Kart Championship. Cohen, a state champion in the class, was going into the weekend against a tough field of drivers. Reece was going into the weekend trying to get another state championship on his resume!

Cohen utilised Friday practice to get the best set up in his CRG chassis and be in tune, ready to go for Saturday morning qualifying. The Topgun Racing team driver made his way into the top 5 of the session and was pushing hard to get in the fight for pole position. Reece was pushing hard and putting in quick laps to keep him in the hunt at the front. The clock hit 0 and Cohen had set the 4th fastest time and was off the 2nd row for the opening 2 heats.

Heat 1 was a key race for Reece where he was hoping to move up the grid but also save his tyre life for the weekend. Cohen got a great start and jumped up to 2nd spot on the opening lap but had pressure from behind across the race. Reece was working hard to try and save his tyres but also hold down 2nd position in the race. Cohen did a scintillating job and was able to cross the line in 2nd position in a great result!

Cohen was once again out of position 4 in the 2nd heat and was looking to move forward in the wet conditions he loved! A start light fault had the karts sitting on the grid for a long period of time and Reece from the race beginning had an issue with his clutch. Cohen limped home to come away with 7th position overall.

Sunday came around and the rain was gone and Cohen was starting out of position 4 once again. The DMC Security backed entry got an excellent start and was into position 3 by the end of the opening lap. Reece had good speed and was running inside the top 3 the whole race while also trying once again to conserve his tyre life. Cohen came home in position 2 overall in another strong showing!

Cohen was able to get another excellent start in heat 3 and was running in position 3 overall. Reece weekend had a turn for the worse with a DNF result on lap 4 due to a clutch issue.

Cohen was on the 2nd row of the grid for the final and was looking to come home with a good result in the championship decider. The Topgun racing driver settled into 4th position on lap 1 but quickly made the move for 3rd position on lap 2. Reece put in a fantastic drive and was able to come home in the podium in a brilliant 3rd position overall!

Reece’s father Darren spoke post weekend on his results. “It was a good weekend and great to come away with a podium. The clutch issues were frustrating but to regroup and come home in 3rd was a great result. We couldn’t do it without Reece’s mechanic Mattia Madami and Troy Hunt from Top Gun Racing!
