Bellars Three-peats Young Guns

by Brodie Sward

The Launceston Kart Club got it’s 2021 season underway this past weekend with the Wyllie’s Kart City Young Guns event that saw Elliot Bellars take his third consecutive Young Guns title.

With plenty of kids in Cadets and Juniors plus a mixture of seniors, 72 competitors competed over the Saturday twilight event with all classes producing great racing all through the field.

New president for 2021, Gary Lee, echoed positive comments about the event; “It was fantastic to see great numbers for our first event for the year, particularly the growth in numbers in the junior and cadet categories. We hope this momentum keeps moving forward for even bigger numbers for our next event on March 27-28.”

Young Guns, Cadet 12 and Cadet 9 winners (L to R) Elliot Bellars, George MacMillian and Jack Kabfell with Dion Wyllie

Cadet 9 saw battles all through the field, with Jack Kabfell in his new Ricciardo Kart taking 3 wins for the day and a 4th to win the Wyllie Family Shield. Aryton Myres showed consistency all day to take the 2nd spot and winning the final race for the day, with P-plater Mason Woods showing some great speed to take the final podium spot for the day.

Cadet 12 had the biggest field for the day of 16, more than double from the same meeting last year which is encouraging for the growth of Cadets in Tasmania. Reining Archerville Classic champion George MacMillian showed great speed and consistency to lead the points and take the win for the Cadet 12 class. Youngster Harry Bresnehan in his new Energy Kart took out second place and showed promising pace all day. Rounding out the podium was Circular Head’s own Lucas Furphy who just stepped up into the Cadet 12 class and was super consistent to take 3rd in points.

Cadet 12 Podium

The KA4 Junior Light final was taken out by Denzil Sargent who finished just ahead of Elliot Bellars. Harrison Sellars was classified as third but not without its dramas, Sellars suffered from a brake failure which saw him hit the tyre wall hard resulting in a red flag and the race being declared from the positions the lap before. Fortunately, Sellars was in good spirits after the crash and was still classified as a podium placer.

KA4 Junior Heavy had a rare occurrence happen where the only person that was left in the race was the winner, Patrick Johnson! With Harrison Sellars out already from the KA4 Junior Light incident, that left only two more karts, Jonty Tunks & Jonathan Harris, who both, unfortunately, DNF’d the final.

Cadet 9 podium

The Young Guns Final saw the best of Both KA4 Junior Light and Heavy mix it up at the same weight, with Elliot Bellars taking out the final over Denzil Sargent with Cooper Synfield rounding out the podium with a good drive to finish third.
