What a weekend of racing we had at the fabulous Cooloola Coast Kart Club with over 120 competitors in attendance for the SQ Series round 2 and round 3 of Pie Eaters & Old Buggers Noisy Tour.
First off, the club paid tribute to Noel Ormes who sadly passed away in an accident a few weeks ago. A sign was produced by Gorilla Graphics to be placed on the grid fence and Noel will truly be on the grid with us now for ever! Rest in piece Noel.
On to the racing action and it was amazing at times with big fields of karters in many of the classes at the track with a hill!
Cadet 9:
In the Cadet 9s Rylan Hockey & Cooper Flynn had great fun learning their karting skills as p-players among some of the fastest Cadet 9 karters around.
In 5th it was Riley Curtis who finished just 4 points behind Madhava Sternbeck. Madhava in turn finished just 4 points behind Seth Huth. The battle of the day however was between 1st & 2nd with the #21 of Toby Musico pushing all the way and eventually securing 2nd place to girl racer Oceane Colangelo aboard the Parolin kart who ended up clean sweeping the day and winning every race!
Cadet 12:
Sam McDermid drove really well all day and got a deserved 5th place against tough opposition. In 4th it was Ryan MacMillan who could have finished higher but for a coming together in an earlier heat resulting in a dnf. In 3rd it was the flying #22 of Cody Anderson, and in second, the race wheels Australia driver Lincoln Taylor. But the win went to the #71 of Beau Bromhead.
KA4 Junior:
A fantastic days driving saw Rhino Mueller secure a fabulous 5th place. Shaun Jaques got himself 4th after a day of battling with the top 3. Third place went to the Cooloola Flyer Harvey Price. Showing yet more improvement and a real force to be reckoned with now, the #44 of Sammy James came home second. And yet again, showing his class and winning the day, the in-form Kurtis Tennant took the win!

KA3 Junior:
In the KA3 Juniors, the travelling #5 of Tyson Jennings was right on form and took a deserved 5th which so easily could have been higher considering the speed he had on the day. Ryan the rocket Laycock managed to grab himself 4th after being super consistent all day. Onto the podium positions and two of the local favourites fought it out for second and third with third eventually going to Byron Phillips, just one point behind #55 Zane Rinaldi. The win, however, went to the super quick Stewart Hare.
KA3 Senior:
In the KA3 Senior class a few drivers had travelled from the north to practice on the Cooloola Coast track in preparation for the Queensland State Championships and one of those drivers, Bradley Balchin, will be relatively happy to have come away with 5th place. In 4th, making his return to racing, was Zari Patrick with a good haul of points. In third was the ever present Robbie Reid, but he couldn’t on this day match the speed of Chad “hole shot” Sampson who bagged second. But no one on the day was a match for the flying Jai Brown!
TaG Light:
The TaG Lights saw Aaron Williams come home in third, with Daley Martin securing second and another convincing win on the day for the #99 Praga driver Dylan Rudd.
TaG Heavy:
Another dominant performance in the Heavy class with Andrew Morgan finishing in third behind the Japanese samurai Jumpei Morita coming home second – and that dominance I mentioned was from Scott Gray who even though he suffered a dnf in heat one, still amassed enough points to secure victory overall.
Open Performance:
One of the most entertaining classes of the day; who doesn’t enjoy watching karts punch through gears on a kart track? Some fabulous racing was seen and finishing in 5th place overall was Angus “buddah kimi” Mathers having some fun aboard his DD2 for the day. In 4th with consistent driving all day was the “plumber“ Billy Miller. Onto the podium positions and Wayne Walker did well to come back from a disappointing 1st heat and eventually secure 3rd overall with some great driving. In second, the super quick #8 of Dan Hutchinson who on this day just couldn’t get his shifter kart working well enough to keep up with the flying DD2 driver and ‘winner winner chicken dinner’ Brock Thornton.
TaG Restricted Light:
In Restricted Light, Liam Moyse was unfortunately down the order in the early heats meaning his 5th place was probably not what he hoped for and indeed lower than he is easily capable of! Ahead of him in 4th with a great drive was Mitch Campbell. Moving to the podium positions we had the #25 kart of Ashley Davis returning from TaG Open and racing his team mates from Team Dribble securing 3rd overall. In second was local favourite Adam Strohfeldt with yet another fantastic win for the in-form #17 of Robby Mortensen.
Project X Pie Eaters and Old Buggers Noisy Tour Round 3
Old Buggers:
In a good field of old buggers, 5th place turning fuel into noise was Northside Kart Supplies owner Kevin Castles. He just pipped our own “Stato” Chris O’Connell even though they finished equal on points! Coming home 4th was Bazza Mendelson with a great drive all day. Onto the podium positions and the #72 of Tony Jones did really well all day to grab 3rd, it was Tezza Grant our very own “technical director” who came home second but out front with a convincing win was Team Gavarni driver Gaven Whitmore.
Pie Eaters:
We saved the stars of the weekend until last – the now famous pie eaters! In 5th place was none other than “Rodney” Rudy Farkas with some great driving. “bettsy” Josh Betts the Dalby flyer came home in 4th just 1 point behind eventual 3rd place getter Jamie Page. Securing a comfortable second place was “wellzie” Brett Wells, and probably the most dominant driver of the day, taking his second class win, was Team Gavarni’s Gaven Whitmore!
Great day of racing all round.
