Matteo Vigano: Success Changes Everything

from CIK-FIA

For more than 12 years, Matteo Vigano has regularly occupied the front of the various categories that he has raced in.

In KF3, then KF2 and KF, before moving to KZ2 from 2014, his speed has never been in dispute. But his success has often been thwarted by unfavourable events.

With uncommon perseverance, Matteo has continued to rise to significant challenges and to enrich his experience. In 2018, he finally achieved a much deserved success at the FIA Karting International Super Cup – KZ2 on the Genk circuit (BEL).

CAN YOU TRACE THE IMPORTANT STAGES OF YOUR CAREER?

Mauro Pozzi is the person who has had the most influence since my debut. He not only taught me how to race, he also showed me how to behave out of the kart, with the mechanics, with the team. I have progressed over time with the MGM team, with Birel Motorsport and PCR then Top Kart before joining the Tony Kart Racing Team in 2016. I am a professional Driver for Tony Kart, I work at the factory, it’s an enviable position, because everyone dreams of being part of this team.

HOW IMPORTANT WAS YOUR GENK SUCCESS?

The FIA Karting International Super Cup – KZ2 is the most important Competition of the year in this category. Winning was a very strong moment for me, because I have had several notable setbacks in my career. In 2009, I was leading the KF2 World Cup at Alcaniz when my engine broke just before the finish. Last year, at the second round of the KZ2 European Championship at Le Mans, the same mishap occurred on the penultimate lap… I have other memories of this kind over the years, but it is in the past now that I have achieved a great international victory.

WHAT WAS YOUR PATH TO VICTORY?

This Competition was a mix of performance and caution for me. The equipment was very efficient and the team was able to adapt to the slightest change to keep my Tony Kart / Vortex at maximum potential. On the other hand, the current tyres require thoughtful management of the races. I had the fastest time and then won almost all the heats. All was well, I was starting on pole for the long Final. I immediately gained a small lead and I tried to spare the tyres. I kept this strategy even as Daniel Bray started to get closer. It was the right option as I crossed the finish line with a 1.4” lead in front of him. I was overwhelmed by huge relief! The Genk circuit was not necessarily my favourite, but I think it has become so!

WHAT DO YOU WANT FOR THE FUTURE?

I’m 25 years old, I work for one of the biggest factories and I’ve finally won an important victory. What I want is to be able to continue. I would like to race in KZ with the best.

I know I will always have more to learn, but I have the chance to work with Marco Ardigo and I do not hesitate to follow his advice, he is a role model for many Drivers. The rest does not only depend on me.
