38 Drivers Acknowledged as Group 2 or 3 Winners at IKC

from Russell Innes

With such large fields of entries in many of the classes run at Ipswich Kart Club Championship Rounds, only the podium placegetters are generally recognised at presentations, etc. Many of the competitors within the large fields never get the opportunity to receive a trophy and speak at presentation and acknowledge their family, sponsors and supporters, etc.

To provide this opportunity and create encouragement for drivers further back in the fields, Ipswich Kart Club introduced the Clubday Challenge Program for 2018 for the “Development Classes” i.e. Cadet 9, Cadet 12, KA4 Junior, TAG Restricted Light, TAG Restricted Medium and TAG Restricted Masters.

A set of eligibility requirements was established for the Clubday Challenge Program to enable the drivers in each class to be classified in to Groups; Group 1 being the top 6 or so drivers who would normally contest for the podium placings, but would not be eligible for the Clubday Challenge Program on race days; Group 2 would be for drivers who would normally contest for positions in the midfield, whilst Group 3 would be the newer and less experienced drivers who would normally contest towards the back of the field.

The highest placed driver at the end of a race meeting in Group 2 and Group 3 in each class would be acknowledged as the Group Winner and as such awarded a trophy and recognised at presentation.

Periodically throughout the season, the Driver Group Classifications were adjusted as some competitors improved, etc, or changed classes.

Throughout the 5 Rounds of the 2018 IKC Club Championship that the Clubday Challenge Program was offered, a total of 38 different drivers were acknowledged as Group 2 or Group 3 Winners. That was 38 drivers outside the class podium finishers, who received acknowledgement for their performances and were recognised at trophy presentations at the end of club days.

By offering this opportunity and the encouragement for many competitors to continue to enter and contest club rounds even when they are consistently finishing outside the podium placegetters, has helped Ipswich Kart Club to continue to attract large club day fields.

For 2019, the Clubday Challenge Program will continue and will be offered from Club Round 3 onwards. Club Rounds 1 and 2 will be used to evaluate the performances of all eligible drivers and then establish the Driver Group Classifications to be implemented from Club Round 3.
