WA KZ Finale: Blake Mills

  16 August 2014

The final round of the FMA Motorsport West Australian KZ series takes place as part of the 5th annual 'King of the Hill' event at Hurricane Kart Club next weekend. Jake Klarich, Darren Burke and Blake Mills fill the top three positions. Today, we hear from Millsy!

by Paul Williams

Q: Millsy, you got a bit of catching up to do to get Klarich. but it is still possible. What’s the plan to win the championship?

BM: Yeah I think I’m still in with a shot. I know I got the pace to do it, I just need a little luck to go my way. We have been fast all year but bad luck has cost me heaps. The plan the next round is really to go out and win every race. We did it last year to beat Joey so I know if we get the setup right there is no reason why we can’t do it again.

Q: You do have a good record at Wundowie. Have you had a chance to get some testing done during the break?

BM: Yeah, the last few seasons Wundowie has been good to me, it’s my home track and I know it very well. To be honest the last time I was there was the last round last year, but I hope to get 1 or 2 days testing in before the meeting.

Q: Any equipment or crew changes? Adam Graham from Energy Karts Australia has been coming over from QLD to help this year.

BM: No, nothing different from what we've been running all year. Just we have learnt a lot more with the kart this year and have found a lot more speed from it so hopefully it will work for us at Wundowie. Yes, Adam's has been great this year for sure. I think we have worked well together. He’s very smart man and very easy to work with. We go to every round to win but most of all go and have some fun. Also Matt Elsdon, he’s been with us for a few years now and is a big asset to the team.  We definitely wouldn't have had the results without him.

Q: So, you’re the 2013 champion, in the running to be 2014 champion. What’s happening in 2015?

BM: Umm at this stage 2014 may be my last year in karts. I plan on doing a bit of Speedcars again this season which I really enjoy. With building a house, work and my personal weight factor, I’m finding it very difficult to find the time to get to the track and put the hours in needed to drive a KZ.

Q: So this is to be your last race meeting in karts! You and your dad Clayton are very well known and respected in karting, not just in WA but eastern states as well. Planning on anything special to mark the occasion?

BM: Well I’m going to race the Gold Coast race at the end of the year but for WA, yes, this will be my last race. Nothing real special. All year Jason Faint has wanted me to run the yellow "banana" suit so I might throw it on for a laugh and try to put Fainty off his game. But other than that I would love to go out on a high and get another win under my belt, and if things go my way hopefully the championship win.

Q: Ah yes, the big Bird suit! It’s well known you're probably the tallest driver to ever grace a kart track! How do you go fitting those legs in a Speedcar?

BM: Yea at 6 foot 5 or 200cm its always been a struggle in every kart I have driven. But I’m lucky I’m tall in the legs not the body so I just fit in the car. Another 1 or 2cm in the body and I wouldn't fit!

Thanks for talking with us Blake, and good luck for the Final and the speedcar racing!
