Whyalla Kart Club Series, Round 5

by Jeremy Head 16 July 2014

Whyalla Kart Club held round 5 of the years racing on Sunday the 13th of July. Although a small meeting, the racing did not disappoint.

As always the Cadets and Rookies started the weekend and again these young drivers really show the adults how it should be done.  They race close and hard without getting in each other’s way.  A couple of small errors with chains coming off and drivers spinning didn’t remove the grin off the faces of these kids.

This race was the last for Rookie driver Corey Datson who will be moving up to Junior National at the next race meeting.  Good luck Corey in moving to the next class up.

Cadet podium for July - 1st Cooper Jones, 2nd Brayden Stewart, 3rd Cadence Florentinus, 4th Lilly Reid, 5th Charlotte Oliver (absent from pic)

The next class out was the 125 Restricted/Clubman Light. This was the first time that these guys had been out on their own at a club meeting for a long time. As per usual the guys did not disappoint with the final result of the day coming down to a count back on points. Racing was so hard for the final couple of points that after getting caught in a minor incident at the start of the final race, 125 Light driver Chris Reid pushed hard and nearly got airborne off a curb after exiting a corner.  You can’t say that these guys don’t take their racing seriously!

Junior National Combined hit the track next with all three drivers doing their best.  All three of these junior drivers travel to Whyalla from Adelaide, Roxby Downs or Booleroo for every race meeting so thanks to their parents for bringing them to our meetings.

The racing in this class was down to two drivers in Bethany Simpson and Joel Oliver, however Rame Lawson is continuing to improve and will be a force to be reckoned with this time next year.

Last of all the combined classes of 125 Restricted Heavy and Sportsman SA took to the track. This was the first time that these classes have been combined in their own right and from a driver's perspective I think it went well.  The racing in Sportsmans SA was again close with drivers attempting to make gaps where there weren’t any and by the time the faster 125 karts came through the racing had all but settled into a rhythm.

A big thanks to our round sponsor Inspiration Paint.
