Thonon & Juodvirsis Rise to Top At Wackersdorf

  14 July 2014

Jonathan Thonon (Praga) and quite possibly the tallest man in international karting, Simas Juodvirsis (Energy), burst through to win the second round of the European KZ and KZ2 Championships in Germany last night.

New names now lead the championship standings as the series heads to the last round at Kristianstad (Sweden) in two weeks. French junior Alexandre Vromant won the Academy Trophy class.

KZ

The KZ Final was thrilling as six drivers fought to the end. On a track with a dry race line (but with damp patches off the side), Rick Dreezen (Zanardi-Parilla-Bridgestone) had a great start from the front row, beating pole sitter Bas Lammers (FK-Parilla-Bridgestone) to the first turn. Italian Marco Ardigò (Tony Kart-Vortex-Bridgestone) followed in third.

It was an intense scrap in the opening laps but soon Jonathan Thonon (Praga-Parilla-Bridgestone), who started from eighth, had joined the pack at the front, together with the Ben Hanley (ArtGP-TM-Bridgestone), Jordon Lennox-Lamb (CRG-Maxter-Bridgestone) and Flavio Camponeschi (Tony Kart-Vortex-Bridgestone).

Thonon got to the front and slowly etched out a gap. Meantime, Ardigò DNFd out of 5th place with an engine issue. While Thonon enjoyed a small gap, the positions behind remained uncertain right to the end, Dreezen eventually taking second ahead of Lammers.

Dreezen is now the new championship leader, 15 points ahead of the rather unlucky Ardigò.

KZ2

A rain prior to the start saw the entire field on wet tyres. After a bit of chaos in the opening lap, German Maik Siebecke (CRG-Modena-Bridgestone) ended up leading (from row five!) ahead of pre-final winner Jan Midrla (Birel-TM-Bridgestone). Midrla tried hard to re-gain the first position, but the German driver fended off his attacks.

Meanwhile, lap after lap, the Lithuanian Simas Juodvirsis (Energy- TM-Bridgestone) had clawed his way up from grid 13 to join the leading group. Juodvirsis made his way past both and stretched the lead on a drying wet/dry track. The winning margin was assisted by the battle for the runner-up position. Siebecke was punted by Midrla and fell back to fourth. Joudvirsis won, followed by Midrla and Irishman John Norris (Mach1-TM-Bridgestone), however, Midrla was hit with a penalty for the contact with Siebecke.

Juodvirsis is the new leader of the Championship, seven points ahead of the Italian Andrea Dalè (CRG-Maxter-Bridgestone) who struggled to a 20th place finish.

Academy Trophy
There was some great racing in the CIK-FIA Academy Trophy where the French Alexandre Vromant got the lead at half race and managed to prevail in a battle between five drivers: the Dutch Richard Verschoor, the Japanese Kakunoshin Ota, the Turkish Berkay Besler and the Dutch Rinus van Kalmthout (all on Parolin-FIM-Bridgestone).

Thanks to the points he scored this meeting and the points gained after the victory in Genk (B), Ota is in the lead of the Championship, only two points ahead of van Kalmthout.

Academy winner Alexandre Vromant. There was no podium interview as the French 15-year old can't speak English and didn't want to give in interview in his native tongue!
