‘Thrilling heats kick off Rotax Nationals at Puckapunyal’

Close qualifying times and blistering heat races have started a tremendous weekend of racing at Victoria’s Puckapunyal Kart track for the 2013 Rotax Nationals, with the six categories racing across three heats with focus now turning to the all-important finals tomorrow.

DD2 Masters

Sydney’s Adam Hunter was too strong in DD2 Masters qualifying, eclipsing the field over eventual second placed Kart Danny Wright. Daniel Richert held on for third after being on the front row for much of the session. Gympie winner Klinton Hancey took fourth from Lee Adams. Daniel Richert returned fire in the opening heat, after an early lead from Adam Hunter, Richert passed Hunter mid race which then saw the Victorian go on to take a victory over Hunter with Danny Wright finishing third from Klinton Hancey and Lee Adams.

In a mirror of the opening heat, Daniel Richert’s late race charge saw him take the win in the second heat over Adam Hunter and Danny Wright, while Klinton Hancey and Lee Adams rounded out the top five. Richert was able to consolidate and push through into the final heat to surpass polesitter Hunter late in the race to take the lead and the eventual win. Danny Wright secured a string of third places with Brent Coghlan in fourth and Lee Adams in fifth.

Rotax Heavy

Queensland’s Kel Treseder backed up from his bumper performance at Pro Tour Gympie to secure pole position Rotax Heavy with a 44.658. Sydney young gun Michael Saller would start alongside him with his time just .01 behind Treseder. Troy Woolston recorded the third quickest time ahead of Brendan Nelson and Dylan Collett.

Kel Treseder continued his run into the first heat by securing a comfortable victory in Rotax Heavy. The Queenslander who is on double duties secured the win over Victorian Troy Woolston and fellow Queenslander Brendan Nelson. Michael Saller who started off the front row alongside Treseder finished fourth over reigning National Champion Matthew Wall.

An early break for Treseder saw him take the lead from the outset; though a charge from Troy Woolston saw him take the eventual lead and race win from Treseder with Brendan Nelson in third ahead of Michael Saller in fourth and Lee Mitchener in fifth. On the rebound in the final race, Saller fought through to take an eventual victory making it a trio of winners in Rotax Heavy, with Nelson holding on for second ahead of Treseder, Shay Mayes and Lee Mitchener.

Sodi Junior Max Trophy

Canberra’s Joshua Car was able to secure pole position in the first National title for the Sodi Junior Max Trophy Class with a 45.467, just fractionally ahead of Kyle Angel with a 45.551. Timothy Colombrita secured third ahead of Glen Ormerod and Alec Morse. Kyle Angel secured a healthy lead at the start of the opening heat for the Sodi Junior Max Trophy Class to hold on for an eventual victory in the ten lap dash. A late pass from Glen Ormerod saw him take second from Timothy Colombrita, Alec Morse and Joshua Car.

The second and third heats created a clean sweep for Kyle Angel in the Trophy Class, with a strong start from Glen Ormerod in the second heat seeing him take second behind Angel. Colombrita continued his healthy run for the weekend to take third ahead of Alec Morse and Joshua Car. A second place for Timothy Colombrita in the final heat behind Angel made it a trio of top three’s with Alec Morse improving his heat position to third with Liam Ford doing likewise to finish fourth and Ormerod in fifth.

Rotax Light

Brenton Mountjoy proved quickest in the capacity grid in Rotax Light, the Kosmic driver was able to secure the time over 14-time National Champion David Sera and reigning National Rotax Light champion Pierce Lehane. Victorian Justin Ford grabbed the fourth quickest time from his fellow statesman, Andrew Carey.

A complex race start in the opening heat saw Victorian Brad Jenner storm to the lead in the first lap, a charge from David Sera would see the fellow Victorian eventually claim the lead which is where he would remain for the remainder of the race. A fight back and late pass from Polesitter Brenton Mountjoy saw him take second behind Sera with Jenner in third from New Zealander Daniel Kinsman and James Sera.

David Sera continued the trend of victories in Rotax Light in the second heat by taking the win from the Polesitter in Brenton Mountjoy, with Victorian Andrew Carey completing the top three. After recording a 20th place finish in heat one, Tyler Greenbury took fourth with Brad Jenner in fifth. A switch in placing’s between Sera and Mountjoy in the final heat saw the latter take his first win of the weekend over Sera with another Victorian in Jordan Ford taking third. Brad Jenner recorded fourth in the final race with New Zealand’s Daniel Kinsman in fifth.

Junior Max

New Zealand’s Marcus Armstrong blitzed the field in the odd numbered qualifying for Junior Max with a quickest time of 44.092 ahead of Queenslander Callum Walker who was just two tenths behind the kiwi. West Australian Nick Mitic in his first Rotax Nationals secured third in the group ahead of Zac Soutar and fellow New Zealander Campbell Joyes. A post session penalty to Callum Walker and Nick Mitic saw them placed at the rear of the grid for the start of the respective heat races.

Victorian Liam McLellan was able to secure the quickest time in the even numbered group in Junior Max, setting up his weekend in third outright from James Abela and Stefan Stankovic. Gympie round winner Jordan Boys secured fourth in the group ahead of Darwin’s Bryce Fullwood.

With the split format according to the World standard, group A and D, New Zealand’s Marcus Armstrong led the first race away from Stefan Stankovic. The pair battled across the ten lap dash with the places being switched mid race which saw Stankovic set out with the lead and take the win from Armstrong with Nicholas Andrews in third ahead of Joseph Burton-Harris and Callum Walker.

In the second string of heat one, group B and C saw Liam McLellan and James Abela starting from the front row and the pair broke away from the outset. The battles continued as the lead and top five changed placing’s on multiple occasions. Abela worked through the second half of the race strongly to hold on for the win over McLellan from Isaac Vaccarella, Zac Soutar and Russell Whittaker.

The consistency from James Abela continued into the second round of heats to take the win over kiwi Marcus Armstrong and Jordan Boys. Mitchell Maddren and Chris Sandrone improved from their opening heat positions to secure the final places inside the top five. Stefan Stankovic backed up from his first heat win to replicate it in his second heat scoring the victory over Isaac Vaccarella. Joseph Burton-Harris took third, while Zac Soutar and Zane Goddard finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Marcus Armstrong was able to capitalise on his pole position to take a heat win in his final race of the day, the New Zealander secured the victory over a charging Zac Soutar with Liam McLellan, Thomas Prascevic and Jordan Boys completing the top five. James Abela continued his strong run to take another victory in the final heat from fellow Sydneysider Joseph Burton-Harris and Queenslander Nicholas Andrews. Russell Whittaker and West Australian Thomas Schou rounded the top five.

DD2

Jason Pringle set the benchmark and continued the Victorian dominance in DD2 by taking pole position from Queenslander Clem O’Mara. After his pole position in Rotax Heavy, Kel Treseder went on to take third from Troy Bretherton and Lee Mitchener. The Victorian was able to capitalise from his pole position to take a clear lead throughout the entire opening heat and went on to take victory from a hard charging Kel Treseder and Troy Bretherton. After starting from second, Clem O’Mara went on to finish fourth from Lee Mitchener.

Kel Treseder set in for a comfortable lead for much of the second heat in DD2, eventually claiming the win by in excess of a second over Jason Pringle who made a last lap dive to take second. Troy Bretherton held on for third from Clem O’Mara and Troy Woolston. Pringle continued his strong run to take the win in the final heat on the back of Kel Treseder’s victory in heat two. Though Treseder was in close company, he held on to second as Troy Bretherton took third. Likewise with Treseder, Lee Mitchener and Joshua Crossingham are on double duties with the pair taking fourth and fifth respectively.

The 2013 Rotax National Championships concludes tomorrow at the Eastern Lions Kart Club, Puckapunyal Victoria with pre-finals over 14 laps and finals over 20 laps.
