Kiwi Superkart Champ to Tackle Australia's Best

Three-time New Zealand SuperKart champion Karl Wilson is taking his talents across the Tasman this weekend to contest the first of two 2013 Australian title rounds.

The round is being held at the Sydney Motorsport Park (nee Eastern Creek) as part of the Shannons Australian Motor Racing Nationals meeting and has attracted a 40-strong field across the three key SuperKart classes, 250cc International, 250cc National and 125cc Gearbox.

Wilson., a 29-year-old service coordinator from Wellington, will drive an Anderson Maverick SuperKart owned by fellow Kiwi Wayne Sproston and use his own DEA engine freshened and maintained over the weekend by top Australian tuner Scott Ellis.

Favourite in the 250cc International class in which Wilson will compete this weekend is defending title holder, Queenslander Jason Smith, with competition expected to come from eight-time Australian champion Warren McIlveen, and the driver who finished third in the New Zealand title race in 2012, Gary Pegoraro.

Though he has now won the New Zealand SuperKart title three years in a row, and won the big Superstars of SuperKarts race at the Laguna Seca circuit in the United States last year, Wilson is going into this weekend's Australian meeting with what he considers are realistic expectations.

"The top Aussies can go anywhere in the world and win so if I finish in the top five I'll be stoked."

This year's Rockpress Australian SuperKart Championship will be fought out over two meetings, the first at Sydney Motorsport Park this weekend and the second at the Phillip Island circuit south of Melbourne in September.
