Ready For The Finals At La Conca

press release 3 February 2013

  • Australia's Joey Mawson qualified his Top Kart 46th in a very tight KF field. He has carded 18th, 11th and 18th in three heats, with a fourth heat to run tonight before the Pre-Final and Final. Live timing, access to results etc on the WSK site.

At the end of a long list of 23 qualifying races, we begin to make out the features of this WSK Euro Series of karting at its opening round and which is in full swing on the International Circuit La Conca of Muro Leccese. The best of international karting, with all its best drivers and the most winning teams, got ready for the finals in today's initial races. The KZ1 and KZ2 Finals 1 already took place assigning the first points for the ranking. Tomorrow the climax of the event with the remaining finals.

Verstappen  chasing victory in KZ1. The success in Final 1 and the first points of the season in KZ1 is today's achievement of the Dutch Max Verstappen, who had to fight back his fellow countryman Joririt Pex's (both on CRG-TM-Bridgestone) attacks only at the beginning of the final race. Verstappen let his teammate gain an early lead, but in few laps he closed the gap and got the head of the race. He finished the race dominating it, given that he had already won both the previous qualifying heats. Behind Pex the brilliant Italian Paolo De Conto (Birel-TM-Bridgestone), who achieved a  terrific recovery from the seventh row of the starting grid.

Negro wins in front of his public. Winning in front of his public, Riccardo Negro (DR-TM-Bridgestone), born in Corsano (near Lecce), began his season in KZ2 particularly well. Negro built his victory thanks to an excellent overtaking manoeuvre during the first laps on the Italian Francesco Celenta (Zanardi-TM-Bridgestone), who, after dominating the two qualifying heats, finished Final 1 in sixth position. Good recovery for the Czech Jan Midrla (Birel-TM-Bridgestone), who finished second after overtaking the Italian Marco Zanchetta (Maranello-TM-Bridgestone), who had to be content with the third place.

Everything still at stake in KF. Many drivers can still aim at victory in KF, given that in the 8 heats run so far there were seven different winners. The only driver who managed to win twice was the British George Russel (Birel-TM-Vega). The other winners of the day are: the French Dorian Boccolacci (Energy-TM-Vega) and Armand Convers (Kosmic-Vortex-Vega), the English Ben Barnicoat (Art GP-TM-Vega), the Polish Karol Basz (Tony Kart-Vortex-Vega), the Croatian Martin Kodric (FA Kart-Vortex-Vega) and the Danish Nicklas Nielsen (Kosmic-Vortex-Vega).

Eliseo Martinez  leads the 60 Mini once again. After setting the fastest time in yesterday's qualifying, the Spanish Eliseo Martinez (Hero-LKE-Le Cont) won two heats today. Anyway, it was no piece of cake  because  he had to deal with the Indian Kush Maini (Tony Kart-LKE-Le Cont), who won once and got a second and fourth place. The driver from Otranto Rocco Negro (Top Kart-Comer-Le Cont) was once again in the limelight thanks to two third places and a fifth place. He will start from the front row in tomorrow's Pre-final.

Norris and Sitnikov battle in KF Junior. Great battles in the KF Junior. Here, the English  Lando Norris (FA Kart-Vortex-Vega) and the Russian Nikita Sitnikov (Tony Kart-BMB-Vega) are fighting hard, winning heat after heat. The Londoner won three times, his rival twice. However, they both had technical troubles in the other races and did not manage to fill the best slot in the starting grid of the Pre-finals tomorrow morning.  Better luck for the consistent Italian Leonardo Lorandi (Tony Kart-Vortex-Vega), in pole position in Prefinal A; next to him Alessio, his brother and teammate. In Pre-final B the front row is occupied by the English Tom Bale, in pole, and by the Indonesian Jehan Daruvala (entrambi su FA Kart-Vortex).

WSK on TV. Tomorrow's decisive races will be viewable live on the official website www.wsk.it and on the specialized website www.stopandgo.tv, beginning from 11:00am local time.
