Who Will Win The 20th Clubman Cup?

press release 12 April 2016

The Launceston Kart Club will be holding the 20th consecutive running of the Clubman Cup this Saturday April 16th.

The Clubman Cup is competed for by 3 classes - Junior Clubman, Clubman Light and Clubman Heavy. Over the years the engines used have changed with Water Cooled ARC motors the force in the late 1990’s and then the very popular Yamaha 100cc engines. Now the new generation of Karting Australia clubman style motors, the KA100, are the engine of choice.

However, with change comes a transition period where number are not at their peak. This year unfortunately the Clubman Light field has not generated enough entries to garner a class. This has left the Junior Clubman (now known as KA3 Junior) and Clubman Heavy (KA3 Senior Heavy) as the two feature classes.

KA3 Junior will see a host of Launceston Kart Club members via for the coveted Clubman Cup. Defending Champion Justin Murphy will head the list of possible winners and has been racing well in 2016. Another Launceston Club member, Jackson Callow, will also be keen to add his name to the winners list and is currently leading the Statewide Series.

Kurtis Love will be one of the young men to watch with some solid practise times being set lately. Reigning Tasmanian State Champion Tate Frost makes his 2016 debut on Saturday and no doubt will be out to show off his Blue Plate. Frost has been in good form lately setting the fastest qualifying time at the last round of the national series.

The only female in the field is Launceston’s Kiana Toon who has really improved over the past twelve months and will be in the thick of it all day. Another that has been competing at national level in 2016 is Lachlan Dalton who will be keen to impress on his home track and will be one of the drivers to watch come Saturday afternoon’s final. The only non LKC member is Hobart’s Harry Ward who will be making his debut in the class and will out to upstage the locals.

In KA3 Senior Heavy, the field is headed by defending and 5 time winner of the Clubman Cup, Zane Wyatt. Wyatt has not raced since the 2015 Tasmanian Kart Championship but will no doubt be on the pace in his favourite class. Wyatt will have some opposition though with another defending champion also in the field in Launceston’s Christopher Williams. Williams won last year’s KA3 Clubman Cup using the new engine while Wyatt won using the older Yamaha motor. This year however all drivers will be using the new KA100.

Alastair Lee will make a return to the Clubman Cup field and will be keen to add to his best finish of 3rd in 2010, 2012 and 2014. Another to return to racing is Hobart’s Danial Newman who has not raced for a couple of years. The field is rounded out by Smithton’s Regan Townsend and Hobart’s Brad Danrell.
