Rotax Pro Tour is racing at Puckapunyal this weekend for round 6 of the 2015 series. The Pro Tour is organised by a private entity, Australian Rotax distributor International Karting Distributors (IKD).
Earlier this year, Karting Australia gave approval for the Rotax MicroMAX and MiniMAX categories to run, but only as part of the Pro Tour national series.
According to the official race program, this weekend will see 8 kids line up in MicroMAX and 21 in MiniMAX (previous round had 11 and 21 respectively).
The question is, should these two kiddie Rotax classes be able to run outside of Pro Tour?
Micro and MiniMAX are popular in many other countries and basically run to ‘world rules’. There is an established supply of parts with upgrades to move class as the driver gets older.
However, these two Rotax classes cater for the same age drivers as Cadet 9 and Cadet 12 and would essentially double the number of categories for drives in those age groups in a landscape already considered to have far too many classes.
Another option could be to integrate the Rotaxes into Cadet 9 and 12, but I’m pretty sure that would be a nightmare (both politically and technically) to determine how parity would be achieved.
So, what’s your opinion?
