Speedshow Karters Racing This Weekend

press release 23 July 2015

With this year's series final being hosted by the KartSport Mt Wellington club this Sunday, spectators impressed by the kart demonstrations and celebrity races at the CRC Speedshow at Auckland's ASB Showgrounds last weekend have an opportunity to see many of the same drivers competing at their home track.

Tucked away in the shadow of Mt Wellington at 29b Tainui Rd, the tight, sinuous little Windward Properties Raceway track continues to test drivers more than 50 years since the first meeting was held there.

In those 50+ years the track has tested the mettle of most of the country's current generation of motorsport stars including Indianapolis 500 winner Scott Dixon, World Karting Champion and Indy Lights class title holder Wade Cunningham, and GP2 class champion Mitch Evans, all three making their competition debut there.

This year the series is as close as ever with as many as 20 drivers still vying for the points lead across six classes.

Three Senior classes will be contested this weekend.

In 125cc Rotax Max Light Rhys Tinney from Hamilton and Taylor Harte from Mount Maunganui are fighting for the top spot while in 125cc Rotax Max Heavy Caleb Hartley from Auckland and class veteran Darren Aislabie from Rotorua finished one-two at the penultimate round at Hamilton.

Stephen Muggeridge from Whakatane, meanwhile, is one of the title favourites in Raket 120.

It's just as close in the Junior classes.

The series' top female driver, Rianna O'Meara-Hunt from Wellington, fought back after a low-scoring Whangarei round with a win at Hamilton over Alex Newlove from Tauranga in Formula Junior, and Hamilton's Osborne brothers, Fynn and Clay two of the drivers to watch in their classes.

In Vortex Mini ROK the older of the two, Fynn, finished second in Hamilton to now two-time class National Schools' champion Ryan Wood. While in Cadet ROK Fynn's younger brother Clay won at Hamilton from young Auckland drivers Liam Sceats and Mason Potter, who won the National Schools Cadet ROK title in Dunedin earlier this month.

There will be testing at the track on Saturday with tuning runs starting at 9.00am on Sunday and racing to follow.
