Round 2 Whyalla Kart Club Championships

by Chris Reid 20 April 2015

Round two saw lower numbers entered however a last minute reminder to drivers and families managed to get an extra few drivers on the list.

In the first class we saw the Cadet 9 drivers take to the track with four driver in this class two C grade female drivers and two young lads just finishing up their P plate D grade requirements, as always these young drivers always show an amazing level of skill, Cadence Florentinus took the lead early in every race for day however the big surprise came from Lilly Reid, who is finally settling into her new Rok. Cadence was able to find her form in the final, however Lilly had done enough work throughout the night to hold on for the round win, second was Cadence, third was Brayden Lee, fourth place was Ky Hubner.

The second class of the evening was the Cadet 12, the champions of tomorrow, young P plate driver Sebastian Hubner took to the track having upgraded his old Arrow kart for a much newer Tony Kart and a brand new Mini Rok, he’s still learning the track and all the necessary skills required for this class of drivers however a noticeable improvement for the young driver, Brayden Stuart finished the day in third still running a Yamaha J engine, second place we saw a Southern Go Kart Club member visiting our track young Kain Armstrong doing everything he could to try and tag onto the back end of our round winner Cooper jones 4 wins from 4 starts,  lets hope Cooper can carry this momentum into next months Whyalla City Titles,

Next up we had the Junior National Combined Class, this was unfortunately the lowest fielded class, with only three drivers two of which were P platers, this junior round really was set for a battle of the minor places, Nathan Peters and Luke Clarke battled out quite nicely in heat one Luke was the successor of this heat which left him smiling from ear to ear, in heat two he had the event of the night loosing a rear wheel coming into the tight right hander just before the straight, I caught up with young Luke after the race and his comment was “ yeah it was scary” as a result the spook took it out of him a little but managed to continue the night, in the final new driver Nathan found himself right up with leader Corey Datson, unfortunately Nathan got tagged and found himself in the kitty litter much to his disappointment, this gave equal points to Nathan and Luke at the end of the night and on a count back Luke was able to take Second Nathan for Third and Cory for the win.

First of the senior Classes was the 125 restricted light, Clubman Light combined, with two drivers from Adelaide, and three P plate drivers there was definitely something for everyone in this class, Adelaide driver and multiple Adelaide City Title holder Daniel Boorman, showed his force with the AKS DBG kart powered by a Jmax four straight wins, with only some early challenges put up by Neil Schmidt, fitness and track heat took its tool on new driver Ricki Cook, having to withdraw feeling ill, Adelaide driver Caroline Kadzelia and local driver Brian Watt, had a great tussle in the early heats, but as the night went on Brian found form and got the better of Caroline who slowly dropped back to fight out the fourth and fifth positions with new driver Claye Peters.

Restricted 125 heavy, clubman heavy combined fielded six drivers to begin the evenings racing however Allan watt had some sever brake problems and was forced to withdraw after the first heat, return driver Scott Hubner had a terrible first two heats almost appearing to go backwards following a collision with Dan Jones, however regained composure and made some serious changes to bring home his Swiss Hutless in second place in the final for third overall, Brian Sampson drove a very consistent race to claim second but all the glory went to James Marsland for an excellent win with three wins for the night.

Final class of the night was the Sportsman Whyalla Class, Given a request to the KA board the Whyalla Kart club was approved to continue running this class, only four drivers made up this field lead by Darrol Jones wins in every class, second place went to Scott Harper, third to Rob Butt, young driver Ricky Johnstone had a terrible night and wasn’t able to front for the final.
