Monarto's C&D Grade Titles

by Michael Yeo 1 April 2015

The sun came up on a day filled with nerves and anticipation as new karters, p-platers and some of the more experienced karters – 95 in all - set up for the annual C n D grade Titles, hosted by The Go kart Club Of SA at the fabulous Monarto Karting Complex on March 22.

As expected there were a lot of karts to scrutineer then drivers briefing and start of qualifying. A and B graders needed to finish 1st outright to receive a trophy.

Above: Drivers' briefing at Monarto

Cadet 9 - had 9 entrants with very close racing in small groups spread across the  A track the C9s put on a fantastic display of racing, The very quick James (Jimmy) Piszcyk who has shown good pace of late and was looking very good for the final, suffered a DNF to leave the battle up to Jedd Stanton and a very confident Ben Holiday closely followed by Kelvin Kirk, Lily Reid and Shelby Chamberlain. Lachlan Rees was the only B grade licence holder in the C9 class and finished in second in the final only counts.

1. Jedd Stanton
2. Ben Holiday
3. Kelvin Kirk
4. Lily Reid
5. Shelby Chamberlain

Cadet 12 - Was well supported with 14 entrants and like the C9s, they were spread all over the track after the green light and a few laps. The action all day though was right at the pointy end between Corbin Baily and Kobi Williams. The 16 lap final had Kobi off pole and Corbin shadowing his every move. With 5 to go Corbin made his move and the battle for that top spot was on. A good crowd had gathered to watch as the commentator was in the drives seat with them calling it corner by corner. The 2 changed positions several more times and thrilled the crowd. Cooper Jones showed early pace having his own battle over the 16 lap journey with local boy Matthew Neitz and Reuben Goodall.
1. Corbin Bailey
2. Kobi Williams
3. Cooper Jones
4. Matthew Neitz
5. Reuben Goodall

JNL—16 for 16 and Jordan Kervers set the pace and won outright claiming the chocolates as the first of the B graders home. Also finding some recent speed, Hayden Jericho cemented 2nd place and had it not been for a broken chain in heat 1 Mikey Jones may have found himself a little higher up the ladder, but a great drive from 11th on the grid to 3rd with Jackson Rees rounding out the B graders. Meanwhile, the race for the top spot was on between Matthew Douglas, Tayla Heath and Brodie Haskard. They were the first of the C graders to take the honours. Eight out of this field were first or 2nd timers, so it was great to see growth in this field.

1. Matthew Douglas
2. Tayla Heath
3. Brodie Haskard

Junior Clubman – Was an all B-grader affair with Tyson Harvey setting a cracking pace only to be relegated to ROF after qualifying. This gave some hope to his rivals as he would have to make his way through the field if he was to be there in the end. Josh Montague and Matt Forrester battled hard for the minor placings on the podium as Tyson made the most of his pace and experience and drove clear to take chequered flag in the end.

1. Tyson Harvey
2. Josh Montague
3. Matt Forrester

Clubman Heavy - Saw the return of Luke Marquis and showed he has not lost any ability in a Kart. Remo Luciani made the trip over and Sparky Marquis made it a MollyDooker double in the class. David Rinaldi and Simon Smith made up the field and in the opening laps they were racing close. Once settled in to the 16 laps, Luke showed his youth and dominance with Remo then Sparky to follow.

1. Luke Marquis
2. Remo Luciani
3. Sparky Marquis

Clubman Masters - The masters was much the same as the Heavy class minus one young fella but add a new comer, Milos Colantuono. David Rinaldi was up and down with kart set up in this one and unfortunately missed the final due to a flat tyre. Simon and Sparky shadowed Remo most of the race until the last few laps as Remo`s skill saw him open a lead to win the final.

1. Remo Luciani
2. Sparky Marquis
3. Simon Smith

TaG 125 Light - John Mangos had this day pretty much to himself although Greg Perry showed early pace taking heat 1. In the final John drove away leaving Greg and Josh to sort out the last couple of places. The pair put on a great display of one-on-one racing until the end with Josh taking the 2nd position.

1. John Mangos
2. Josh Feilding
3. Greg Perry

TaG Restricted 125 Light - 11 entrants ventured out for the Restricted Lights and Sparky Marquis joined the fun as the only B-grader. Qualifying on pole, Michael Yeo and Sparky raced side by side trading the lead in the heats closely followed by Guilliuam Dombret and Luke Whitten. The final was flag to flag for Sparky, mirrored by Michael leaving Dombret and Whitten to battle for the minor placings.

1. outright –Sparky Marquis
1. Michael Yeo
2. Guilliuam  Dombret
3. Luke Whitten

TaG Restricted 125 Heavy - This was a cracker of a final for minor placings as Michael Mangos had dominated the day and left the rest in his wake. Jamie Coles hadn’t done a 16 lapper and racing in 2 classes was a question of could he hold on to cover a fast finishing Ben Forester? And hold on he did as the battle was building to be an epic finish as Ben Had come from a long way back to catch Jamie, only to have a chain come off causing a DNF - much to the relief of Colesy who went on to take 3rd behind Adam Forester.

1. Michael Mangos
2. Adam Forester
3. Jamie Coles

Sportsman TaG Restricted 125 Masters - This class is a class that suits the South Australian guys very well with the different weights all running at the same time with different restrictor plates. Ultimately fun is the name of the game here and with 15 in the event was sure to be just that. Michael Yeo had the Ricciardo Kart out for the first time at Monarto and wasn’t headed in all races. This left David Parkinson to defend 2nd from David Brewer Snr and a very good relative newcomer to karts, Warren Neitz. The battle for the minor placings in this field with the variable restrictors was very close and made for some entertaining racing from the old fellas.

1. Michael Yeo
2. David Parkinson
3. David Brewer Snr
