RIP Bobby Allen

Former karting world champion Bobby Allen has passed away, aged 81.

Better known for his career in Sprint car racing, Allen was the second karting ‘world champion’, winning the title at an event run by the Go Kart Club of America in Nassau, Bahamas.

This was prior to the inaugural CIK-FIA World Championship event for karting in 1964.

The video below is from the Nassau event in 1960. Sixteen-old Bobby won the 100-lap Sir Victor Sassoon Trophy to claim the World Champion title. He won the Nassau event for a second time in 1961.

“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our beloved Bobby ‘Scruffy’ Allen”, his sprint car team posted.

“He did it his way and that was the ‘scruffy way’. He will be loved and terribly missed by all. He was a legend on and off the race track and his contributions will live on forever.”
