Gordon Mellis believes British karting’s history is at risk of being lost. Much of that history sits in out-of-production print publications, a format that is only accessible to the few people who might have preserved copies of the magazines.
Mellis has initiated a project to digitise that content and make it available to all.
“My solution is to build an easily accessible comprehensive archival website, populated with each edition of these iconic magazines.
“The magazine collection has been carefully curated and meticulously preserved and with all the necessary legal rights in place to enable the project to proceed, it’s time to move onto the final phase.
“This will involve the arduous task of scanning and digitising the content from 1000+ magazines (and quite a few books), ready for uploading to the archival website.”
To achieve this, specialised equipment, software and services needs to be engaged, and Mellis is looking to the karting community to assist with this – see below.
As a side note, Mellis authored Racing Rules Explained, a book for novice karters that was adopted by Karting Australia (and 14 other countries) a few years back.
