It was certainly an impressive 2024 karting season for youngster Thomas Williams, and he had numerous successes to back up that claim.
In only his third year of karting, which consists of one in juniors and two in seniors, the 18-year-old from Toowoomba in Queensland continued to make further developments as a driver in 2024, and it resulted in him not only backing up his NSW Championship success in the TAG Restricted Light class in challenging weekend weather conditions for what was his first visit to the Port Macquarie circuit, but finishing third in the Queensland Championship in the TAG Restricted Light class at Ipswich and winning the overall Toowoomba Kart Club Championship on his way to taking out the TAG Restricted Light point score following six round wins and four second-place finishes.
“It has certainly been a massive year for the team and I, and my highlight for the year was without doubt backing up my NSW Championship win by qualifying on pole position for the final and then leading the whole race, and it proved that last year’s win was no fluke,” Williams proudly said.
“Apart from my successful NSW Championship defence, I was really pleased with my consistent front running form in the Toowoomba Club Championship, and it not only saw me take out the TAG Restricted Light class points, but the overall Toowoomba Club Championship which was a very big honour.”
Williams, who won the Winter Carnival Series within the Toowoomba Kart Club Championship and also finished third in the Ipswich Club Championship for the TAG Restricted Light class, continued on by saying that 2024 was a successful year it was also one where he learned a lot.
“As everyone knows, karting is very competitive, and you never stop learning, and I feel that I learned so much during my 22 race meetings this year and it helped improve my front-running speed,” he said.
“Aside from running most of the year in the TAG Restricted Light class, I ran one race meeting in the KA3 Snr class, which was during the Queensland Championship where I managed to come away with a top 10 finish. KA3 Snr is a very tough class with a lot of experienced competition, and I had a lot of fun racing in the class, and I’m looking forward to doing a bit more racing in that class next year.”
In terms of his 2025 season plans, Williams is focused on trying to defend his Toowoomba Club Championship running in both the TAG Restricted Light and KA3 Snr classes, as well as competing in the NSW Championship at Dubbo where he is aiming for three TAG Restricted Light class wins in a row, the Australian Karting Championship round at Ipswich, and selected Ipswich Club Championship rounds.
