NSW karters Antonio Ornelas and Lazarus Anonuevo made strong debuts at their first international race in Italy a couple of weeks ago.
Competing with the 3DK Racing Team on Gold Kart at round 3 of the Kartsport Circuit Championship at Franciacorta, both drivers had to learn the track and the tyre in the two days prior to competition.
Lazarus started strong, qualifying fifth in the Mini class and placing second in the pre-final. He was in second place when pushed off track and consequently DNFd the final.
Engine problems saw Antonio qualify 12th, then a delay getting the kart started for the pre-final forced him to start P16. He drove back to 12th in the pre-final, then charged all the way to the podium in the final.
“Driving from twelfth to third in the final was almost better then winning considering my odds!” Antonio commented.
The boys plan to head back to Italy early next year.
