Saturday – Sprint

Another really good weekend of racing saw 152 entries making their way up the Bruce Highway on a four-hour drive to Bundaberg Kart Club for some great racing cadets, juniors & seniors. This tricky 750 metre circuit has some interesting and challenging parts for all drivers. Racing was run in the clockwise direction with qualifying followed by 3 x 8-lap heats and an 8-lap final.

Sunday – Enduro

Sunday saw the final round (round 5) of the enduro series and this was an absolute blast.

First up was the Junior & Junior Light two-hour race with 5 compulsory pit stops. No videos for this one and I’ll explain why shortly. In the junior light class Bryson Racing managed a very respectable 3rd place. Just a seven second margin after two hours of racing separated first from second, Crash Test Dummies winning over Sherrin Rentals Racing.

In the juniors it was a much more emphatic victory for Hot Chip Racing by four laps over The Kart-Dashians. In third place it was Twinkle Toes Racing.

Moving on to the senior classes, 23 karts were on track for the two hour enduro with the Performance Twins doing an extended enduro with an extra 30 minutes. In the Senior Lights, a great victory for the Sherrin Rentals Racing over The Rockets in 2nd. Bringing the #21 home in 3rd was the TIZMS. Senior Heavies win was taken out by the Easy Peesies, Low to the Ground coming home second & White Racing Team 3rd. Senior Max were also on track and in their two hours of racing, Race Ventura got second behind Tank Slapper Racing.

In the 2.5 hr race the #140 of Matrix Motorsport got 3rd & Phoenix Motorsport came second, but neither were a Match for the Gas-Up racing entry which took victory by a huge 7 laps!

I saved the best until last because the Senior Medium class had a team named Rowdy Racers, and once again the rowdy racers are Alan Lippiatt and myself, Kev The Noise Davies! We drive the affectionately named Factory CRG #45 entry. For my part, I had never driven Bundaberg Kart Club before, so 10 minutes of practice and four minutes of qualifying for me saw us 4th in our class. Alan started the race and unfortunately he got turned around in turn one! This meant we were dead last and from there the work started. Fun the whole way is all I can say, with faster karts regularly passing you and you passing slower heavier karts – it’s always a nervy time. We stuck to our game plan and strategy and eventually got within a couple of laps of the leaders “The Ballard of T Hawk”. Midway through my final stint a small mistake in the double apex left hander saw me park the kart on the dirt! I wrestled it back onto the track and continued the race to bring it home in one piece!

After passing the scales I found out we were second. This was a great effort from the team considering the start! But then we discovered that Chris the main driver for the Ballard of T Hawk had missed one of his compulsory pit stops, which in enduro racing is a 5 lap penalty! And would you believe it, that gave us, “THE ROWDY RACERS”, victory by a tiny margin of 4.269 seconds! Yes my first ever kart race win… and first ever shoey.
