Back in 1990 I was doing some work for Kart & Formula Magazine.
That year I also competed at the AKA Nationals in Launceston, Tasmania, and got to witness Graham Powles win the second of his two National Championships.
Racing his self-built Monza GP kart, the 100cc International final turned into a marathon for the then-42-year old as the top steering column bolt came loose early in the race.
On the boat back to the mainland the following night, we chatted about the win, his karting and his plans for the upcoming World Championship.
That discussion forms the basis of the Driver Profile the magazine later published (see below). As a side note, I’m 95% certain the photos were taken by former Supercars driver Jason Bright, who was also competing at the Launceston Nationals and was pretty handy with an SLR camera.
