After a long winter break, the Ipswich Kart Club Championships returned on Saturday the 3rd of August with the running of Round 5.
With a few of the normal class leaders away contesting the City of Melbourne Titles, it was refreshing to see some new names amongst the placings and on the podium across the various classes.
Quade Powers, Jye Flynn, Tyson McGill and Tyler Tilmouth were the frontrunners throughout the Heats in KA3 Junior Heavy, but McGill was too quick in the Final leading all the way and winning comfortably from Flynn and Powers.
Flynn doubled up also racing KA3 Junior Light and had 2 Heat wins with Ryan Reid winning the other Heat. Gabriel Elkayam, Tyson McGill, Jett Saraghi, Annabel Kennedy and Lana Flack were all amongst the placings through the Heats. In the Final Flynn led from the get go and was never challenged, winning comfortably from Basilo Micale and Reid.
DD2 numbers at IKC continue to grow and a field of 13 was led home by Brock Plumb in Heat 1. Seth Brown won Heat 2 before Plumb again won Heat 3. Amongst the placings were Scott Cleveland, Troy Bretherton and Angus Mathers. In the Final Bretherton led early before Plumb went to the lead on lap 3 with Brown following him through. Plumb slowly edged away out front from Brown to win by a small but comfortable margin with Bretherton 3rd.
KA3 Senior provided some great racing with Dominic Penman winning 2 Heats and Lachlan Platten the other. In the placings were Brieann Moyse, Lucas Lesmes and Thomas Hunter. In the Final Penman led all the way but Platten really pushed him hard and was very close behind at the finish, whilst Hunter was solid in 3rd for most of the Final before Moyse and Lesmes pounced late in the race. Moyse snatching 3rd on the last lap.
In TAG Restricted Medium, Dean Silcock won 2 Heats with Matthew Goddard winning the other and amongst the placings through the Heats were Gabriel Goodchild, Zac King, Alan Czislowski, Trent Harders and Bradley Cox. Silcock led the Final from the start with Goddard and Harders following. On lap 5 Harders made a move to grab 2nd from Goddard and that’s the way they ran to the finish. Silcock winning by a small margin from Harders with Goddard a little further back in 3rd. Unfortunately for Goddard he had incurred a start penalty and the 3 second penalty would cost him 3rd overall with King benefitting to move up to 3rd.
Thomas Williams took advantage of a favourable random grid draw to win Heat 1 in TAG Restricted Light, ahead of championship leader Jack Munro and then Riley Van Den Broek. Cody Scott also used his random grid draw to good effect in Heat 2 to win ahead of Jake Czislowski and Munro, but Munro had finished on top in points after the 1st 2 Heats and led away from pole in Heat 3 for a strong win from Williams and Scott. Munro again led away from pole in the Final and progressively moved clear to win comfortably from Williams with Robert Mortensen emerging from the pack for a solid 3rd place.
The huge TAG Restricted Masters field had the usual frontrunners winning the Heats, Gavin Soward 1 and Aaron Rabjones 2, with Jeff Thompson, Michael Robinson and Mark Robinson in the placings across the Heats. Rabjones and Soward left the pack behind in the Final and Rabjones led all the way winning by a small margin from Soward but these two well clear of Mark Robinson in 3rd.
Felix Sim, Jacob Brook-Lenehan and Riccardo Johnston were the 3 Heat winners in Cadet 9 and filled the other placings across the Heats, with only Oliver Flack getting near them. In the Final Johnston led early but Sim challenged and took the lead on lap 3. Johnston went back to front on lap 4 but Sim kept the pressure on and went back to the front on lap 6. Johnston immediately challenged again though and retook over at the front again on lap 7 and was then able to build a very small but comfortable margin to win. These two were well clear of the battle for 3rd between Brook-Lenehan and Flack with Flack getting across the line in 3rd but copped an Infringement Notice for contact and was dropped 1 place elevating Brook-Lenehan to 3rd place.
Kayden Thompson, Jack Wells and Trent Newton were the Heat winners in TAG Light, with Marc Tulloch, Jordi Slater and Keegan Fraser all amongst the placings. In the Final Newton led from the start and won comfortably from Wells and then Thompson. This was Newtons first outright win at Ipswich in TAG Light.
New Queensland Champion Brent Reading had a dominant wins in the 3 TAG Heavy Heats. Scott Gray and Josh Dagg followed him across the line in Heat 1, Bradley McNaught and Zane Morrison the placegetters in Heat 2 and Morrison and Brody Barton in the placings in Heat 3. Reading was unchallenged in the Final winning comfortably from Morrison and Christopher Williams.
Jaxon Turner and championship points leader Jaxon Duong put on a great display in 4SS Junior. Turner won all 3 Heats and the Final but Duong was so close each time on track, the biggest gap between them all day being only 3/10ths of a second. Jack Doull and Hamish Douglas filled the placings through the Heats but Keanu Bell was able to grab 3rd in the Final behind Turner and Duong.
As he has been all year, Alester Flack led proceedings in Cadet 12 with a solid win in Heats 1 and 3 with Jeremy Broadbent winning Heat 2. Knox Black, Vincent Ter Horst and Zander Watts were amongst the placings in the Heats, but in the Final Michael Quintiliani joined Flack and Watts in a fantastic battle for the lead with all 3 leading a lap at some stage but as he has consistently done this year at Ipswich, Flack was able to lead the field home for a very narrow win from Watts and Quintiliani.
The Ipswich Kart Club Clubday Challenge Program also returned for this Round and the Group winners were, Frankie Majorek in Cadet 9 Group 2, Harry Lack in Cadet 9 Group 3, Knox Black in Cadet 12 Group 2, Oliver Tresilian in Cadet 12 Group 3, Marcus Lio in KA3 Junior Heavy Group 2, Jett Saraghi in KA3 Junior Light Group 2, Dylan Kammerlocher in KA3 Junior Light Group 3, James Bartrop in TAG Restricted Masters Group 2, Nicholas Crofton in TAG Restricted Medium Group 2 and Jordan Manzano in TAG Restricted Light Group 2.
Next race meeting at Ipswich Kart Club will be the Australian Rotax National Cup on 17th and 18th August, followed by Round 6 of the IKC Championship on Saturday 7th September
