It is with a heavy heart we learn of the passing of former National champion Greg Selwood.
Greg had been unwell with brain cancer and passed away on Friday, January 10.
Originally a karter from Melbourne and a long-time driver with DPE, Greg was Australian Champion six times – four as a sub-junior/junior (1978, 79, 80 and 81) and twice as a senior, 1990 (Reed) and 1991 (International class).
Our condolences to his family and friends.
Funeral arrangements will be posted once known.
Statement from DPE and words from Drew Price
It is with great sadness we advise of the passing of Greg Selwood at the age of only 55
Greg had endured an 18 month long battle with cancer. Greg fought with the same determination that he showed in all areas of his life and whilst there had been some encouraging signs along the way his condition deteriorated rapidly in the past month and very sadly he passed away on Friday evening with his family at his side.
Greg was a private person and didn’t want people to know how serious his illness had become.
In our business’s early years Greg was the first young karter that DPE ever sponsored and whilst we have sponsored many since, very few have been as successful as Greg Selwood, a 6 time Australian Champion in both Junior and Senior classes. Greg was also supported in karting by his family and also by a few very valued friends along the way. He had a great personality from a young age and he was just the sort of person that people liked to help.
Greg worked part time at DPE for several years whilst he studied. He had a great worth ethic and strong principles and it always looked like he would succeed in life.
Greg moved from Melbourne to Sydney with work approx 25 years ago. Together with his brother in law Tino they established Martini Industries a very successful manufacturing business within the textile industry eventually employing approximately 120 staff. Approximately 5 few years ago Martini entered into a joint venture with CSR and Greg continued to work in the business up to just a couple of months ago.
Drew and Greg maintained a very strong freindship and never lost contact with each other. To quote Drew: “Greg has been one of my closest friends for many years and I feel privileged to have known him so well. We talked a lot about business and other things over the years and I know for sure that we learnt a lot from each other along the way. During this very difficult last 18 months we coummunicated regularly and got together on a few occasions and I remember telling him that I considered him a cross between a son and a brother, such was our relationship. His passing is just too soon and is a real tragedy”
To Greg’s beautiful family, his wife Diana and his children Lana and Isaac and to the entire Selwood family we offer our heartfelt sympathy at this very sad time. Our sincere thoughts are with you – From Drew and Bart Price, the entire Price Family and all those within the DPE team over the years that knew Greg and there is many.
