Crowned FIA Karting European Champion – Superkart for the second time in a row, the German Peter Elkmann has been almost invincible this season.
Although his talent as a Driver is essential, his careful preparation work also counted in the final score. An eclectic Driver, having raced in Formula 3 in the 2000s, he recently returned to the Motor Sport in LMP3 or GT4, but Superkart remains his priority.
YOUR JOY IN WINNING WAS VISIBLE AT THE CHEQUERED FLAG. DOES THIS REFLECT A CULMINATION OR WILL YOUR PASSION CONTINUE?
Superkarts remain my main goal. It’s a great discipline and I will be back with the same motivation next year. I would like to grab a third consecutive title to reach the level of Bennett and Vinuales within the winners of the European Championship.
TODAY, YOU HAVE A VARIED PROGRAM IN MOTOR SPORT. DO YOU THINK THAT YOUR LAST SEASONS IN SUPERKART WERE A STEPPING STONE?
It’s hard to say that, because the Superkart is not as well-known as the car categories I race in where contacts also count. But I think I can say that if you excel in a demanding discipline like Superkart – which I think is the case with the best Drivers in the Championship – you can claim to score well in almost all forms of racing.
SEEN FROM THE OUTSIDE, THE FIGHT FOR THE 2018 TITLE MAY HAVE SEEMED EASIER. IS THAT RIGHT?
It was not necessarily the case. I am a perfectionist, but I also have doubts on occasion. The preparation work is an important element of success, because you must always try to leave nothing to chance. Engines are a crucial but fragile element that must be prepared according to two constraints that are in opposition: performance and reliability, a problem that is particularly important in Superkart. I must take this opportunity to thank Jan Jehlik and also Russell Anderson who helped me a lot.
