Brake Clevis Tech/Safety Update

  24 September 2014

Last month, Karting Australia published a Technical Advisory document regarding brake rod clevis spring clips, their failure (resulting in no brakes) and acceptable and recommended solutions for karters to follow.

The full document can be read in PDF format via the KA website HERE, but the gist of it is:

The little fellas below, once very popular for attaching brake rod pivot points, are still in use. It's not uncommon for the retaining clip to break, allowing the pin to fall out.

Well used brake rod clevis clips. The retaining clip has fatigued and broken off the one on the right.

The 'minimum standard' solution is to use a cable tie (3mm min width) as illustrated

The 'preferred standard' is to ditch the clip and replace with high tensile cap screw and nyloc nut (the bolt should have 10-12mm of parallel unthreaded shank, cut short and radiused so there are two threads exposed through the nyloc nut)
