Whyalla Kart Club Series - Round 6

Whyalla Kart Club ran round 6 of the championship on Saturday August 2nd.

The meeting was small with drivers having other commitments, however this did not detract from the racing.

The Cadets had only two drivers on the track. This was beneficial track time for Lilly Reid and Charlotte Oliver.  Both girls are normally close in their racing and not having to worry about other karts this made for a great learning day for the two girls as they raced close and hard.  Lilly and Charlotte also demonstrated that there doesn’t need to be lots of karts on the track for carnage to happen.  With both girls spinning on the same corner at the same time.

Next out was a lonely Joel Oliver in the Junior National class.  Unfortunately the other two drivers had to withdraw, one due to illness and the other due to mechanical issues.  This didn’t stop Joel from going out and having a blast.  He pushed his kart to the limit, even getting it up on 3 wheels on more than one occasion.

Finally all the seniors were out together.  This meant three different classes of drivers on the track at the same time. This can be interesting as faster karts come through the field and get amongst the different classes.

First in the lineup were the 125/Clubman Restricted Lights.  This class is always worth watching and Chris Reid did not disappoint. Coming off a Festival State Cup round win only 2 weeks ago he dominated the day with a strong first place over Dennis Cumerlato and Aiden Sossa.

Next in line were the 125/Clubman Restricted Heavy karts.  This field had the most ups and downs of any of the classes out there and there were only 2 karts.  Between them there was 1 disqualification, 3 did not start and 2 did not finish.  A crazy day of racing for these guys who normally trade rubber on regular basis.  It came down to the strongest kart of the day to take out race honors.  This went to Allan Watt in first and Brian Sampson in second.

Last on the track with this field were the Sportsman SA karts. This class again demonstrated how strong an entry class of racing can be.  Jeremy Head and Scott Harper traded side pod bumps and rubs on numerous occasions however the racing remained clean and fair.  Scott Harper took out his first event win with Jeremy Head in second followed by Robert Butt.

If you are interested in karting and want to know more about how to get involved come to the next race event on the 13th of September and talk to the drivers.

Alternately the Club will be holding it’s AGM on the 19/08/2014 at the Left Hand Club. Meeting will commence at 7:30.
