Race Report – Warwick Club Round – 11th May 2014

Racing resumed at Sandy Creek Raceway on the 11th of May with the Warwick Kart Club holding the 3rd Round of their 2014 Club Championship. A good field of entries was boosted by some of the DD2 guys getting in some early race practice for the upcoming Pro Tour Round. In addition a good little field of Cadet P Platers were in attendance, 3 of whom were having their first race meeting after participating in the WKC Junior Drivers Clinic back in April.

Cadets

Jett Johnson, Jack Westbury, Luke Pink and Kai Walker enjoyed some great battles all day in Cadets, Johnson winning the 1st 2 races and Westbury winning the last 2. Johnson just a tad more consistent and winning overall from Westbury, with Pink edging out Walker for 3rd overall. Dylan Birse and Nathaniel Harrison were recent graduates of the Junior Drivers Clinic and both had their very first race meeting and were rewarded for their good driving with 1st and 2nd P Platers. Michael Harch had his first race at Warwick and was 3rd P Plater.

Rookies

Michael Philp was just a little too quick in the Rookies field and won 4 from 4, with Harrison Stock, Marcos Innes and Dale Zimmerman having their usual battles fighting for the minor placings, Stock finishing 2nd overall with Innes 3rd.

Junior National Light

Samuel Poulsen had a good day in Junior National Light with 4 comfortable wins. Bo Butler and Lachlan Maher battled all day for the minor placings, Butler edging out Maher in the final race and securing 2nd overall from Maher in 3rd.

J Max

Daniel Plant just had a little too much speed in J-Max and won all 4 races, Nick Lane kept him honest at times but had to settle for 2nd all day and 2nd overall. Joshua Thompson and Sebastian Blindell ran close all day, a little too close sometimes as they both DNF’d the 1st race after an on track coming together, but enjoyed some good battles for the rest of the day, Thompson overall 3rd.

Qld Sportsman Light

Shane Roberts continued his amazing dominance of Sportsman light with 4 wins from 4 races and only being led for 3 laps all day whilst he worked his way forward from a 10th spot start on the grid in Heat 2. Dean Weighman and Derek Jones tried real hard to keep Roberts honest and battled for the minor placings all day, Weighman getting the upper hand in the final race and just taking home the 2nd place trophy narrowly from Jones. Peter Bossons, Tim Farrell and Evangeline Blindell were the best of the rest in a good size field.

Qld Sportsman Heavy

Craig Nissen had a good day out in Sportsman Heavy with 4 comfortable wins. Nathan Pearce followed him home on each occasion. David Bossons and Kevin Cossor were never too far apart all day, but Bossons got the upper hand in the final race for a 3rd placing and secured 3rd overall. Perry Evans and Rick Franzolini showed glimpses of front running pace but couldn’t match the consistency of the front running 4. Evans eventually 5th overall with Franzolini 6th.

TaG 125 Light

Jordan Condor and Dalton Ellery were the class of the field in Tag 125 Light, both winning two races each and two 2nd placings, but Condor with his win in the final race, took home the 1st overall trophy. Jackson Lines was consistent with 4 x 3rd placings. David O’Çonnor and Trent Hill battled all day over 4th and 5th, O’Connor getting the upper hand when Hill DNF’d the final race.

DD2 and DD2 Masters

With the Pro Tour Round coming up in June at Warwick, quite a few of the DD2 guys ventured up from Brisbane for some race practice and put on some entertaining racing. Tristan Ellery was the only youngster up against all the veterans, including his dad Steve and the old boys certainly showed him a few things during the day. The younger Ellery won race 1 from Clinton Hancey and Scott Howard. Howard led home Hancey, Steve Ellery and Tristan Ellery in race 2. Howard again was too good in race 3 from Ellery Snr, Hancey and Ellery Jnr. Ellery Snr came out on top in race 4 from Howard, Hancey and the younger Ellery. Howard was 1st overall in DD2 Masters from Steve Ellery and Hancey, whilst the younger Ellery was the DD2 winner.

June will be a busy month up at Sandy Creek Raceway with the Pro Tour Shakedown and Round 4 of the WKC Championship on the 1st of June, followed 3 weeks later by the Rotax Pro Tour Round.
