Vic Superkarts, Round 1

from Rolf Greve 14 February 2014

The Victorian Superkart Club held round one of the 2014 Club series at the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit on February 8.

What was intended to be a four race event was shortened with two red flag incidents on track. In the one involving the Superkarts the driver was taken to hospital as a precaution but was released that night, and attended our club meeting two nights later.

Racing was quick in the 250 International class but it was Matt Bass who showed he would be one to watch this year. Long time driver Gary Pegoraro had a mixed day, but at a club day you never know if he’s just slowing for a better look at the competition. Sam Zavagila made a return to the twins after two years in Stock Honda with a engine new package out of Europe that was starting to show some real promise.

Former 250 National driver Jason Akermanis showed some early form but unfortunately was plagued with a few engine gremlins. Dalton Rowell had a mixed day in only his second drive of a twin as did Brendan Luneman and Anton Stevens. Unfortunately Dallas Brooks had one of those bad ones.

Whilst the 250 Nationals may have been thin on the ground this class is seeing a resurgence nationally. It was a great debut for Raff Pironi who by sheer consistency held out to take the day ahead of Jack Makay and Scott Appledore.

The 125 gearbox class suffered with a lack of entries, mechanical issues, and a big off at turn one at this round so it gave Shane Fewster a comfortable win. The 125 class was very strong last year as the sport awaited the recognition of the Stock Honda class by CAMS. The class sponsored by Woodgate Racing is attracting newcomers to our sport who want to race a gearbox kart with the minimum of fuss and mechanical “know how”. The class is very popular in the U.S. and is taking off here in Australia.

The racing was close as it is a control class, and its putting down consistent laps that gets you a race win. In the end it was Jeff Duckworth ahead of Rick Hobman and Craig Edwards. Craig also posted the first official lap record for the class, and we can see this changing many times of the course of the year.

In the non gearbox (or Rotax classes) It was Tim Clarke who managed the win ahead of Russ Occhipinti and a fast improving Braden Bailey in the Hold on to Life “Lights Class”. Not much further back in the Oz Design Nunawading Heavies it was Jamie MacDonald who was dicing hard with  Alan Dodge while Rod Clarke bought home third place.

The next round of Superkarting will be held at Winton Motor raceway on March 8 & 9 as part of the Victorian Motor Race Championships.
