karting here, there and everywhere...

  • Popular Oakleigh photographer Andrew Daley will be donating 20% of all sales from January, February & March to charity in support of fighting cancer. He made the decision after the sad passing of one of his dad's closest friends, who was also a long time friend of the family. "It's an insidious disease that nobody deserves to have to endure" he said. "I've also decided that for the February Club Day at Oakleigh, I will be selling 6" x 4" prints on metallic paper for $5 each (plus postage, or free pick up) with 50% of every one sold going to charity. This is a huge saving in itself, but also it's going to support, hopefully one day, helping at least one person beat cancer." www.akdphotos.com

  • The French Karting Federation, FFSA, has allocated tyres for the three year period 2014-16. The rubber for each class is:
    Mini Kart: Vega Cadetti
Minimal and Cadet : Bridgestone YDS
    National : Mojo F1
    KZ125 : Vega SL4 (dry) and Vega W5 ( rain)
Endurance : LeCont LH03 (dry) and LeCont LH06 (rain)

  • Also in France, the FFSA will conduct 20 race meetings in 2014, from March to November on 18 different circuits. During the course of the year, 14 French Championships will be awarded, plus nine 'Cups' within the 14 classes of competition.

  • This is not what we like to see, but it was rather spectacular: on-board with Aaron Cameron, Jnr MAX Pro Tour pileup on Sunday. This was not a race start, it was a rollup lap! It was like a NASCAR wreck; capacity field and pretty much everyone from mid-grid back was involved at some point. Thankfully no serious injuries, but there were some sore bodies afterwards and lots of equipment got torn up.

  • American tyre (err, tire?) brand Hoosier have announced their first rain tyre for sprint karts. The Hoosier WET compound is designed with a substantial amount of wet traction for 'effortless maneuverability in heavy rain conditions'. With a cold durometer reading of 43-45, Hoosier say the compound is equipped with high levels of durability for damp or drying track conditions. The recommended starting pressure for the WET is 14-16 psi (cold). The front is 10" diameter with 4.25" tread width and designed for a 4.75" wide rim. The rear is 11" diameter with 5.5" tread width and designed for a 6.75" wide rim.

  • The sound of things to come? Electric kart testing at Lonato:

  • Industry: Corey McCullagh and Chris Rodda have taken over the reigns of Warrnambool Karts in South West Victoria. Formerly run and owned by Ron Shiells for the last 15 years, the business has been renamed McCullagh Karts & Parts. Stock will be held in both Warrnambool & Colac, plus a range trackside at selected events. "We would like to thank Ron Shiells for the opportunity and look forward to servicing new and old customers" McCullagh wrote on Facebook.

  • The new FIA Formula 4 category is gaining traction around the world. With (in theory) less budget required than National level Formula Ford, this class might see a few extra karters move to open-wheel wings-n-slicks car racing. In Italy, only drivers 15 to 17 years of age, straight out of karting, will be eligible to be crowned Italian Formula 4 Champion. Drivers 18 and over will compete for a seperate Formula 4 'Trophy' title.

  • AKA Nationals poster. Supplementary Regulations for the 52nd running of the AKA National Sprint Kart Championships, to be held at Newcastle on April 16 to 20, are now online. Find the link on our Race Calendar page.

  • RGMMC, organizer of the Rotax MAX Euro Challenge, will be the first in the world of karting to use the new X2 system from mylaps, which is currently used by Nascar, MotoGP, Indy Car and other FIA events. RGMMC has added MyLaps as a new series partner and MyLaps will be present at all rounds of the Rotax MAX Euro Challenge.

  • The kargest karting club in the UK has installed a new digital track display system. "Trent Valley Kart Club has been using Digi-Flag since the start of November for their racing events which are attended by over 800 racing members" Sports Timing Systems' Andrew Lovatt informed KartSportNews. The Digi-Flag system is not only a replacement for traditional flag marshalls, but also allows officials to digitally display messages such as driver warnings and instructions instantly. The system continuously logs and time-stamps all interactions for post-race analysis.
