Karting Championship For School Kids

  12 November 2013

A unique karting initiative has been launched across Australia giving secondary school aged students a kart racing opportunity not to miss.

Licenced kart racers can now race with their non-karting school friends as part of a school team and compete against other schools across Australia in the Australian Schools Karting Championship.

“This fun, but serious competition enables current karters to become their own team managers, and lead and show their mates how it’s done” KartSchool Australia’s Gerald Chait told KartSportNews.

It’s easy to participate. High school students between the ages of 13 and 18 who currently race karts simply form a team of three with two non-karting friends from the same school who’ve always wanted to have a go, but never had the opportunity.

“There is no limit to the number of teams entered from each school, as long as the regular karter only races in one of those teams” Chait added.

“The other teams can comprise any three friends, and they don’t require any formal racing experience.”

“Imagine the feeling, the pride, the respect and success of one of the teams being crowned Australian Schools Karting Champion.”

The final championship races are set to occur on outdoor circuits, whilst the initial lead-up rounds will be run on some of Australia’s most sophisticated indoor tracks.

These lead-up rounds will qualify teams and drivers for the second and final stages of the competition. Venues and dates are yet to be announced, but it’s anticipated the championship will kick off early in 2014.

“We want the experienced karters to mentor their teams in the more controlled environment of an indoor track where they use karts with timing and control mechanisms which are ideal for practicing and leading teams.”

Karters will be encouraged to get their school teachers involved.

“Science, technology and sports teachers are loving the idea” Chait enthused.

“It makes classroom teaching so much more interesting. In the lead up to events, teachers can draw on a range of resources, including lesson plans mapped to the curriculum, to teach topics such as forces and motion, friction, control systems, acceleration and braking. Teams can then apply these concepts to maximize performance on the track.”

The competitive team environment will also be great for enhancing students’ relationships with teachers and help develop their organization, teamwork and management skills.

While the Schools Championship is not AKA-specific (the ‘karting experienced’ driver can come from any official karting body), Chait says he has the support of Karting NSW and has been speaking to the North Shore Kart Club about running a round in conjunction with one of the club’s standard race days.

“I think there's a fantastic opportunity for existing AKA licenced drivers to lead and mentor their school team” he said.

“There’s some great information on the website including instructional videos, karting movies and other footage. A forum has also recently been added, so why not be the first to start a thread?”
