Speedway 'Wescranes Nationals'

Graham Hart, the owner of Windsor NSW based company Wescranes, has been a sponsor and supporter via his business of the NSW Speedway Kart Club for close to 10 years.

That support continued on Sunday 20th October  as the club hosted the annual “WECRANES Nationals” .

Over 60 of the States finest speedway karters nominated for the time honored event and this race meeting saw drivers compete on the exciting 300mtr Bullring track which always produces racing that is hard, fast and close.

After a long winter stint on the ultra fast 400mtr track, all the driver had to refocus and some of the best elbows up racing of the season was seen at the event entertaining the crowd on hand.

In hot and trying conditions the racing was superb, no more so than in the Cadet class, and the skill level shown by these young drivers is so evenly matched that 4 different drivers on the day claimed victories from the 4 races.

The Cadet  class heat racing results were:

Heat 1: 1st Ethan Rietdyk, 2nd Payton Coghlan, 3rd Conner Moreau
Heat 2: 1st Conner Moreau, 2nd Payton Coghlan, 3rd Brayden Shute
Heat 3: 1st Payton Coghlan, 2nd Ethan Rietdyk, 3rd Brayden Shute

Come feature time, the track had sped up to the fastest it has been all year. A race long battle between Shute, Reitdyk, Coghlan and Moreau raged for 18 of the 20 laps before a yellow caution flag bunched the field back up. This gave drivers a chance to try and pass Shute who had until the stoppage cleared out and had a commanding lead.

At the restart an incident in turns 1 and 2 saw Ethan unfortunately make contact with another kart bringing his race to an end. After the final restart Shute went on to hold off the fast finishing field to take the win. The final results for the feature and taking home the hardware for the day:

1st Brayden Shute, 2nd Payton Coghlan, 3rd Jack Selmes. The highest points scorer for the class on the day was Payton Coghlan.

The Rookie class all year has seen some intense battles rage and The Nationals did not disappoint in this area. The heat race victories were shared between Luke Geering and Andrew Sayre with Sayre taking bragging rights from Geering. However the feature race was one of the races of the day with not only Sayre and Geering, but also Kaidon Brown and Liam Camilleir wanting something to say about the final result.

Mid race, Sayre pulled off a spectacular pass to take the lead, however late in the race he went a little too lean on his fuel mix and that was all Brown needed to run him down with a never-give-up attitude and making a late race pass to take the lead and go on and win the race.

Rookie race results were:

Heat 1: 1st Andrew Sayre, 2nd Zak Blanch, 3rd Kiadon Brown
Heat 2: 1st Luke Geering, 2nd Kaidon Brown, 3rd Andrew Sayre
Heat 3: Andrew Sayre, 2nd Luke Geering, 3rd Kaidon Brown
Feature: 1st Kiadon Brown, 2nd Liam Camilleri, 3rd Luke Gerring
High points for the day: Kaidon Brown

The Junior class this year has been dominated by Daniel Sayre, and again at this race meeting he showed all in attendance just how smooth and skillful his driving is and no doubt is headed for bigger things in the future. His near perfect day was only hampered by the heat 1 win of Matt Geering. The heat racing was tough and all 11 of these young drivers showed skill and maturity far above their age and are a credit to the sport of speedway.

The drive of the day was certainly Sayre’s display in the feature race - from his starting position of 11 he passed all in the field to take victory.

Junior race results:

Heat 1: 1st Matt Geering, 2nd Jake Donaldson, 3rd Dan Sayre
Heat 2: Daniel Sayre, 2nd Luke Sayre, 3rd Marcus Dumesny
Heat 3: Daniel Sayre, 2nd Luke Sayre, 3rd Matt Geering
Feature: 1st Daniel Sayre, 2nd Matt Geering, 3rd Marcus Dumesny
High points for the day: Daniel Sayre.

The Clubman Light class this year has been the battle of the sexes with the largest contingent of lady racers taking it up to the men and it was no different this weekend. The racing was tough between the two standouts being Jordan Binskin and Jake Baines. Together they shared the 4 race wins with 2 victories each. Lady racers Alana Onley and Ashleigh Jack took some minor placings in the heat racing. Come feature time it was all Binskin and Baines. After starting position 4, Binskin ran down the early race leader to show a clean pair of heals to the chequered flag, whilst Baines - starting out of position 10 - was able to race his way into 3rd place by race end.

Clubman Light results:

Heat 1: 1st Jake Baines, 2nd Alana Onley, 3rd Daniel Gow
Heat 2: 1st Jordan Binskin, 2nd Ashleigh Jack, 3rd Jake Baines
Heat 3: 1st Jake Baines, 2nd Daniel Gow, 3rd Jordan Binskin
Feature: 1st Jordan Binskin, 2nd Wayne Baines, 3rd Jake Baines
High points for the day: Jake Baines

Clubman Heavy saw a smaller but talented field nominate for the day racing. The heat racing saw Matt Elliott take 2 victories whilst Daniel Selmes was the only person who spoil Elliott’s attempt at 3 from 3.

The feature race was very entertaining and saw Les Green, Elliott, Slemes and Matt Angilley all trying hard to take home feature race glory. After 20 hard laps Angilley picked up his maiden feature race victory at the circuit and capped off a solid day for the improving driver.

Clubman Heavy results:

Heat 1: 1st Damiel Selemes, 2nd Matt Elliott, 3rd Les Green
Heat 2: 1st Matt Elliott, 2nd Les Green, 3rd Mick Bell
Heat 3: 1st Matt Elliott, 2nd Dan Selemes, 3rd Les Green
Feature: 1st Matt Angilley, 2nd Les Green, 3rd Daniel Selmes
High points for the day: Matt Elliott

The KT Modified class is one of speedway karting’s elite classes and they presented an over subscribe field for this event.

For the heat racing the class was spilt into 2 groups and then the top points scorers from those heats then faced up in a full field battle royale for the final.

With points at a premium the heat racing was cut throat with not one driver taking a back step. Group 1 had 3 different winners from their heats - heat 1 saw Brad Cunneen take the win, Young lady racer Amy Shute showed the boys she is not to be messed with taking out heat 2 whilst John Watton was victorious in heat 3. Meanwhile in group 2, David Boyd took 2 wins in heats 1 and 3 with Tim Baker taking the win in heat 2.

Come feature time everyone at the venue stopped what they were doing to come and watch the race of the day and it didn’t disappoint.

With the 2 best drivers of the day - Watton starting out of P13 and Boyd starting form P12 - it was Watton who got the early break in traffic. Within a hand full of laps he had forged his way to 5th and looked strong to go on and take the win. Meanwhile, Boyd was methodically picking off drivers one at a time and climbing through the pack. Then with only a hand ful of laps complete a kart checked up in front of Watton leaving him no where to go and unfortunately he spun to a stop.

Following the restart Boyd again was patient and made his passes stick. At race end Boyd had made his way to 3rd following home James Melling in 2nd and race winner Peter McKenzie.

KT Modified results:

Heat 1a : 1st Brad Cunneen, 2nd Donald Stevens, 3rd John Watton
Heat 1 b: 1st David Boyd, 2nd Leighton O’Brien, 3rd Ayden Elliott
Heat 2 a: 1st Amy Shute, 2nd John Watton, 3rd Mitch O’Brien
Heat 2 b: 1st Tim Baker, 2nd David Boyd, 3rd Ayden Elliott
Heat 3 a: 1st John Watton, 2nd Amy Shute, 3rd Brad Cunneen
Heat 3 b: 1st David Boyd, 2nd Tim Baker, 3rd Leighton O’Brien
Feature: 1st Peter McKenzie, 2nd James Melling, 3rd David Boyd
High points for the day: David Boyd

Other awards for the day were the OnTrack Automotive hard luck awards for each class and they went to
Williams Stevens, Liam Walker, David Blanch, Wayne Baines, Laurie McDougall and Dean Hickey.

The Valvoline Raceway Outstanding Achievement award went to Daniel Sayre as the over all high points winner.

The meeting was a great success and all drivers and members are looking forward to the next race meeting  which is being held on Sunday, 3rd November.
