Karting News Briefs

keep up to date, mate...

  • 300 drivers from 27 countries will compete in the 2013 Rok Cup International Final at the South Garda International track in Italy this week. The four-day event starts Wednesday with the finals on Saturday, followed by a huge party at the track. Australian karter Nikolaj Thomas will be racing with Lotus in the Junior Rok class. Updates are scheduled to be posted to www.rokcup.com throughout the meeting.

  • For the first time since 2008, the Kiwis will contest a national dirt track karting championship. The event will take place at the Kartsport Auckland Rosebank Domain complex on November 23/24. Further details, classes offered, Supp Regs etc are on the kartsport Auckland site HERE.

  • Col Fink posted a Magnesium Wheel Selection Guide on the Kracer blog a couple of days ago, comparing various brands (Oryx, Douglas, Edwards, OTK, Tecno, KG) and types of rim currently available. You can read it HERE. South Australian karter David Brewer subsequently posted his findings from his own wheel testing - covering kart feel, tyre temp, lateral G etc using various rims - in the Kartbook forum. You can read that HERE.

  • It would appear there was a controversial outcome in the Junior MAX class at the Pan-American challenge at NOLA Motorsport Park on the weekend. OGP team driver Ashley Rogero crossed the line first, but, according to ekartingnews.com, Rogero elected to withdraw from tech inspection, essentially forfeited her victory and handing the win to British driver Guan Yu Zhou. Thing is, Yu Zhou, like Rogero, is already qualified for the Rotax Worlds, so the ticket went to next driver in line - Rogero’s OGP teammate Kyle Kirkwood. If Rogero had held the win, the world final ticket would have gone to a non-OGP driver, Ryan Norberg. A sunday wrap from the event is on ekartingnews HERE.

  • Speaking of NOLA, it seems drivers are damaging their chassis by flying over chicane kerbing to keep up momentum. There are some wicked photos of karts in mid air from last weeks Pan-America Challenge (browse through the gallery HERE), but several drivers effectively wrote-off their frames, either grinding the bottom of the rails flat, or distorting them out of shape. Organisers and track managment are now considering taking steps to lessen the severity of the kerbing heading into the Rotax Grand Finals.

  • Five months after a spectacular crash, where he fractured his collarbone and suffered severe back and rib bruising, Toowoomba karter Trent Harders makes his return to racing on the Gold Coast for the Race of Stars this week. Read the full article on the chronicle HERE.

  • Live Timing for the IAME X30 International Final this weekend is set to be broadcast HERE. Joseph Mawson (Kosmic), Kip Foster and James Allen (both DR Kart - all engines are IAME and running Komet tyres) will be representing Australia. There is a gallery of photos on the AKA Facebook HERE.

  • Australian karting identity Jon Targett will become the face of Intrepid karts in Australia for 2014. The Italian brand will be 're-birthed' Down Under - full detail in issue 14 of KARTX Magazine, which is being posted to subscribers today.

  • Congratulations are in order for Bundaberg karter Kel Treseder who tied the knot with Danielle Thompson last weekend. No question, Kel is a hardcore karter, entering the reception with new wife in tow behind his KZ kart! (check out a future issue of KARTX for more pics.) And what of the honeymoon? Well, first week will be the Las Vegas Supernationals! "(but then) that's followed by skiing at Lake Tahoe with JT & Rae then off to New York" Kel informed KartSportNews. Good luck for a long and happy future together!
