Round 5 of the M.I.A Powder Coating Southern Star Series was hosted by the Griffith Kart Club on September 21 and 22. With 123 karters entered for the final round of the Southern Star Series it was sure going to be a weekend filled with plenty of excitement and fantastic hard fought racing.

The Griffith track provides drivers with a unique opportunity to race under lights with the prefinal on Saturday night living up to all expectations from a driver and spectator’s point of view.

Starting with Rookies, Thomas Sargent had a fantastic battle with Blake Fardell each winning 2 races before starting the final. Cody Burcher in his first Rookies race from Cadet’s performed well along with Tayla Harnas. The final result was Thomas Sargent first followed by Blake Fardell in second and Cody Burcher in third.

A strong field of 12 Cadets lined up with local driver Noah Sands performing very well in the heats on his home track. In first place was Sydney driver Zach Heard, followed by Josh Sargent from Grenfell in second and Canberra’s Josh Haynes in third.

The fiercely contested Junior Max class saw Gus Flynn and Zane Morse fighting hard all weekend leaving Gus Flynn to lead home Zane Morse in Second and Chris Cooper in third after a weekend of intense racing.

Crowd favorites Open Performance Heavy again put on a great spectacle with Steven Martin taking out first place in front of Robert Harnas in second and Peter Beeten in third position.

TAG 125 Light was won by Adrian Hogan with a near clean sweep apart from one heat and Beck Connell performed well to finish second followed by Anthony Barrie in third.

Tag 125 Heavy saw Canberra driver Robert Hogan just edge out Wagga local Tony Woodward for second with Canberra driver John McCabe biting at his heels in third.

TAG 125 Super Heavy had local driver Paul Cirillo from Griffith start out well with a win in heat one, but a strong comeback from Nathan Jess (Canberra) and Peter Beeten (Grenfell) soon turned the tables with first place going to Nathan Jess followed by Peter Beeten in second and Paul Cirillo in third.

In Sportsman Restricted Light local drivers Rino Mezzomo and Marianne Croft couldn’t match Michael Seiders speed and consistency which rewarded him with a first in front of Alexander Milward in second and Micheal Hogan in third.

The final race for the day was Sportsman Restricted Heavy with the honors taken by Mather Whale, with second place going to Greg Parker and third place to Chris Wykes.

At the completion of Sunday’s racing saw the round presentation along with the overall series presentations.

Jarrod Prendergast from Griffith was the lucky winner of the MONACO chassis which proved so fitting after Jarrod’s Kart was damaged at the Grenfell round earlier in the series.

A big thank you to all the Karters, supporters, officials, delegates and helpers over the series and also our major sponsors MIA Powder Coating and Abrasive Blasting along with DPE Kart Technology.
