Clubman Class Wide Open At Speedway Titles

from Brian Van De Wakker 6 September 2013

This year’s Clubman Australian Speedway Title is wide open in both Light and Heavy. Anyone of the thirty plus drivers entered for the event has the chance to claim the AKA Australian Speedway Title in their respective class. So far this year both Clubman Light and Heavy have been the most hotly contested classes, and we expect nothing short of spectacular racing this weekend.

Michael Saller is aiming for his third Australian Title in two weeks when he takes to the start grid in Clubman and KT Heavy. Last weekend Saller was victorious in Rotax Light at the Rotax Nationals, this weekend Saller will aim to go back to back and defend his Clubman Heavy crown at this weekend’s Australian Speedway Karting Title.

2011 Clubman Heavy Australian Champion Daniel Selmes is back to reclaim the title he lost in 2012. Daniel has shown consistency so far throughout season 2013 and will definitely be one of the favorites to watch out for.

Nathan Camilleri was second in the 2012 Australian title, but is hoping to go to the top step this weekend. Camilleri hasn’t raced a lot throughout this season, but when he has he’s been right up the front and hunting for race wins.

Alistair Barrance and Gary Slarke both make a return to racing this weekend and are expected to be competitive up the front. Regular runners Les Green, Peter Styles, Joel Robertson and Matthew Angilley will all be in the title fight vying for the feature win.

Clubman Light is the biggest field of this year’s Australian Title with up to twenty drivers set to contest. 2011 Australian Champion Jonathan Bright returns to the nepean venue this weekend in hope to relive his success. Bright will have to overcome a competitive Clubman Light field that could see anyone of ten drivers take the win.

Also returning to competition is Jason Woodward. Jason was second to Bright in the 2011 Australian Title and in his return in July he placed third for the round. Woodward will take the fight to the front runners and may just be able to land himself that Australian Title win.

One young gun who is hoping to add to his list of Australian Titles is Jake Baines. For the past two years Jake has taken back to back Juniors Titles, but his set up to the senior’s level has meant a new challenge. Already this year Jake has taken multiple round wins and is going to be tough to overcome. Can he win three Australian Titles in as many years?

Another young driver aiming for Australian Title success is Hayden Sunderland. A former tar racer, Sunderland has only been a part of the dirt karting scene for less than six months. Already he has claimed a third at the NSW titles and backed it up with another third at the 50 Lap Shootout. Sunderland has gained the respect of his fellow racers and is a strong chance of taking a win this weekend in Clubman Light.

Six lady racers will have their shot at winning the Clubman Light Australian title. Jade Pollock, Lindsay Jones, Amy Stewart, Alana Onley, Simone Smidt and Natalie Genner will try and take the title off the boys. Can a woman win the Clubman Light Title for the first time?

These questions and many more will be answered at this weekend’s Aussie Forklift Repairs Australian AKA Speedway Karting Titles. Racing will get underway at 10am on both Saturday and Sunday, entry is $5 for adults and all canteen facilities will be open. You will find Nepean Raceway on Rickards Road, Castlereagh.
