The heat races are complete for the 2013 Rotax Nationals at the Hume International Raceway in Puckapunyal, Victoria.

During qualifying it was Brenton Muntjoy who upstaged the capacity field of Rotax Light competitors to snare pole position ahead of 14-time National Champion David Sera while Queenslander Kel Treseder set the pace in the Rotax Heavy category narrowly ahead of Michael Saller. In the Junior Rotax category it was New Zealander Marcus Armstrong who showed his Australian counterparts the fastest way around the Puckapunyal circuit.

Jason Pringle was fastest in DD2 while Adam Hunter (DD2 Masters) and Joshua Car (Sodi Junior Rotax Trophy Class) will also start on pole position in their respective category.

During the opening heat race, Treseder led the early laps of Rotax Heavy before exchanging the lead with Troy Woolston throughout the 10-lap journey. In the end it was Treseder who gained the upper hand ahead of Woolston and Brendan Nelson.

There was action of plenty during the opening few turns of the Rotax Light category which resulted in a DNF for reigning champion Pierce Lehane. David Sera showed superior speed to slice his way past RK Karts driver Bradley Jenner. After being caught up in the opening lap fracas polesitter Mountjoy fought back to cross the line second behind Sera.

In the Junior Rotax category, the field was split for the heat races with Stefan Stankovic taking out the A vs D Group ahead of Armstrong.  Formula K driver put in the drive of the race with by charging his way to fifth place from the back of the grid after being given a penalty for weaving during qualifying.  In the B vs C Group it was James Abela who proved victorious over fellow Victorian Liam McLellan and Isaac Vaccarella.

The other heat wins were shared by Jason Pringle (DD2), Daniel Richert (DD2 Masters), Kyle Angel (Sodi Junior Rotax Trophy).

The second round of heats saw Sera once again take the Rotax Light win ahead of Mountjoy.  Andrew Carey held out Tyler Greenbury for fourth ahead of Jenner.

Abela and Stankovic  also made it two wins from two starts by crossing the line first in their respective Junior Rotax categories.  Armstrong finished second ahead of Jordan Boys and Mitch Maddren the A vs C heat won by Abela.  Vaccarella was second behind Stankovic with Joseph Burton-Harris third.

In Rotax Heavy Woolston got the better of a battle with Treseder for the win while Kyle Angel was victorious in the Sodi Junior Rotax Trophy Class.  Treseder made his way past heat one winner Jason Pringle early in heat two before going on to claim the win ahead of the early race leader and Troy Bretherton.

In DD2 Masters Richert took the win ahead of Adam Hunter and Danny Wright.

The third round of heat saw Saller take the win in Rotax Heavy ahead of Treseder, who will start on pole position for tomorrow morning’s pre-final.  In the Light category David Sera appeared as though he will make it three consecutive victories before Mountjoy relegated him to second place late in the race.  In his first Rotax event, Jordan Ford has been a quiet achiever throughout the day working his way up the order to claim third in the final heat.  Lehane’s day went from bad to worse when he had a spin mid-race leaving him with a DNF, ninth and 34th on his scorecard.

In the Junior Rotax ranks, Zac Soutar led the early running of the A vs B heat race before Armstrong took over the lead.  Despite being passed by McLellan at the same time as Armstrong took the lead, Soutar fought back for second place.  In an all Redspeed front row James Abela got the better of the start in the C vs D heat while Stankovic got caught up in a melee on the exit of turn one.  Abela left the pack behind him to battle and emerging in second place was Burton-Harris ahead of Nicholas Andrews.

Richert once again proved superior in DD2 Masters to take a clean sweep of the day, as did Angel in the Sodi Junior Rotax Trophy Class.  Jason Pringle made it two wins from three starts in DD2 when he crossed the line ahead of Treseder and Bretherton.
