‘Nationals in the eye after Pro Tour Gympie’

The Finals day on the Sunshine Coast for round 7 of the Rotax Pro Tour has presented some of the closest racing yet, and is sure to heat up the fight for the Rotax Nationals that is just over a month away.

DD2 Masters

Queenslander Klinton Hancey continued his clean sweep in DD2 Masters into the pre-final by taking another comfortable win over Victorian Hamish Leighton by half a second. Adam Hunter remained in close company with the pair for much of the race to eventually finish third ahead of Michael Robson and Tony Bregonje.

In his first event behind the wheel in the DD2 Masters category, Klinton Hancey held on to take a close win in the 24 lap final over a hard charging Adam Hunter who capitalised on a blistering race start. Hunter would eventually come through to take second behind Hancey, ahead of Hamish Leighton who made a last lap pass to complete the podium. Tony Bregonje and Luke Turner went on to complete the top five.

Rotax Heavy

Kel Treseder was able to fend off regular challenges from both Matthew Greenbury and Brendan Nelson in the Rotax Heavy pre-final to eventually take a comfortable victory to the line. Nelson lead in patches, though a last lap pass by Greenbury saw him finish second behind Treseder, with Nelson in third ahead of Mason Barbera and Rick Pringle.

Bundaberg’s Treseder maintained his clean sweep of Rotax Heavy into the final by taking a comfortable win in the end over fellow Queenslander Brendan Nelson. Treseder was challenged for the lead on numerous occasions, though Nelson eventually settled for second with Matthew Greenbury finishing just 0.074 behind in third, Rylee Walton and Dylan Collett held on to complete the top five.

Sodi Jnr MAX Trophy Class

Kyle Angel took a convincing win in the Sodi Junior Max Trophy Class pre-final, though the battles continued behind him for second, third and fourth. Stephanie Stones, Matthew Byrne and Liam Ford all traded places on numerous times with each having their share of the lead of the pack. A post-race penalty applied to Angel saw him excluded from the race, which allowed Stones and Byrne to start from the front row in the final ahead of Ford and Chris Bregonje. Starting from the rear of the grid, Kyle Angel drove a stellar race in the final to take a win, though the lead changed on numerous occasions. Angel was on top at the end ahead of Matthew Byrne and Liam Ford who scored the fastest lap of the race, while Chris Bregonje and Stephanie Stones completed the top five.

Rotax Light

It was another dominant performance from reigning National Champion Pierce Lehane in the Rotax Light pre-final that saw him take a clear victory by the fall of the chequered flag. New Zealand’s Daniel Kinsman was again engaged in an enthralling race for the minor positions that would see him hold on for second ahead of Daniel Rochford and Cian Fothergill with Andrew Carey completing the top five. Just five laps into the Rotax Light pre-final, an array of close battles resulted in Queensland’s Mitchell Griffin making heavy contact with the fence on the approach to the final corner. Event medical staff responded to the incident, and Mitchell was subsequently released from hospital a short time after. A single file restart occurred with ten laps remaining in the race.

Lehane continued his stranglehold in the longer final race, sprinting away thus acquiring the fastest lap of the race with a 36.956, taking the win by 4.5 seconds over Daniel Rochford who regularly traded places with Kinsman. The Kiwi held on to complete the podium ahead of Tyler Greenbury and Andrew Carey.

Junior MAX

Albury’s Jordan Boys was able to capitalise on his fastest lap of the race in the penultimate lap in the Junior Max pre-final to take a narrow victory over heat Polesitter Lachlan McHugh. The 37.122 time for Boys was enough to take the 0.4 second win over McHugh with Queenslander Callum Walker finishing third from BlackBerry Junior Encouragement Award winner Isaac Vaccarella and Russell Whittaker.

The outright pace returned for Jordan Boys in the final, as he was able to take a more comfortable 1.6 second win over Callum Walker. Lachlan McHugh was shuffled back on the start to the tail end of the field from the intense traffic battle heading into turn one, though he recovered to finish sixth. Rebounding from his disappointing qualifying performance on Saturday, Victorian Liam McLellan put in the drive of the weekend to work his way through to third by the completion of the race ahead of Ipswich round winner Nicholas Andrews and Russell Whittaker.

DD2

In DD2, starting from pole position, Queensland’s Troy Bretherton went on to take a comfortable victory in the pre-final. Contact between Michael Stewart and Travis Millar eliminated the pair from the race on the opening lap, thus allowing reigning National Champion Lucas Ward to progress through to second. The battles continued behind Ward with rankings leader Jason Pringle following close behind for much of the race, to finish third ahead of Clem O’Mara and Rotax Heavy winner Kel Treseder.

An absolute enthralling battle completed the day of racing in the DD2 final, with an intriguing dice for the top four throughout the entire 24 laps. A sharing of the lead over the course of the race between Ward and Pringle kept the four-way race alive through to the end. Contact between Treseder and Bretherton in the final stages at turn one allowed Ward and Pringle to pull away, thus seeing Ward take the win from Pringle with Treseder finishing third ahead of Michael Stewart and Thomas MacDonald.
