Los Angeles Karting Championship, Round 4

The fifth round of the 2013 Los Angeles Karting Championship took place the second weekend of June. Racers from all over California converged at the CalSpeed Karting Complex in Fontana, to compete on the Classico circuit. Weather was never an issue, as the sun shined down on another solid turnout of racers with terrific racing all weekend.

The father-son team of Billy and Willy Musgrave continued their complete domination of the LAKC. Billy scored another perfect weekend in the 2WildKarting.com S2 Semi-Pro Stock Honda class. Musgrave led every lap in the main event, giving him the win over the Pure Karting driver Augie Lerch and Matias Podboj. Travis Nicklas and Chandler Campbell rounded out the top five. As usual, on the track with S2 was the MRC S4 Stock Honda Masters class. And as usual it was the senior Musgrave up front. Willy paced the S4 field all day, by first securing the pole over Erik Jackson, and then beating Jackson out for the pre-final win. Taking a page out of his son’s book, Willy led every lap of the main event as he out ran Jackson for the win. Jason Chott completed the podium with Troy Butts and Ron Rossetti finishing fourth and fifth.

The Buddy Rice Karting TaG Senior class was dominated by Alejandro Fernandez. After going wire to wire in the heat race, Fernandez led the opening four laps of the main before losing the lead to point leader Carlee Taylor. She led until two laps to go when Fernandez got back around for the lead and the victory. Taylor finished behind Fernandez in second with John Wallace III in third while Ty Matta and Diego Pelosi filled out the top five.

In the TM Racing USA Open 125 Shifter class, Alex King was looking to keep things rolling from his success last month in May. King got off on the right foot Sunday as he picked up the pole position in class. The pole in qualifying was the only time King would occupy the number one spot though. Slava Prikhodko stole the lead at the start of the pre-final and held it all the way through the checker flag at the end of the main event. King would stay hot on Prikhodko’s heels all day earning him a second place finish. Chris Curtis, Rob Whitley and Jesse Romer completed the top five in Open 125 Shifter. On the track in the same group was the Acceleration Kart Racing S4 Stock Honda Magnum class. Rick McAllister kicked things off by earning the pole position in qualifying. McAllister spent most of the pre-final dicing it up with the faster Open 125 class racers, as he left Kevin Gilroy to fight with Sal Menudiado for the runner-up spot in the race. The start of the main saw two of the top three in S4 Magnum unable to complete a lap, as pre-final winner McAllister and third place finisher Menudiado were out of contention before the completion of lap one. With McAllister and Menudiado out of the race, Steve Donia was not challenged as he led from start to finish, earning him the victory in the main event. Behind Donia was Kevin Gilroy in second while Marc Segal stood on the third step of the podium with Jeff Horne in fourth.

The Hyper Racing Engines PRD Junior One class belonged to Myles Farhan, at least until the main event. Farhan scored the pole position and pre-final win over Johnny Dressler, who won position on the final circuit of the pre-final after an eight lap long race with Gary Lyles, giving Dressler a front row starting spot alongside Farhan. Dressler hung with Farhan in the early stages of the main event but with seven laps into the race, Dressler made his move and took the lead from Farhan. Dressler held on to the lead for the final ten circuits as he spoiled Farhan’s perfect day. Farhan’s day would only get worse as he rolled his kart through post race tech inspection. PRD Junior One is a spec sprocket class, and after finding an illegal sprocket on his kart, Farhan was disqualified from the main event. Farhan’s DQ handed second place to Lyles, with third going to Justin Hodge. In the Fleming Racing Engines KPV 1 class, Dante Yu also had a perfect day going until it was spoiled in the main event. Yu picked up the pole position and then proceeded to lead from flag to flag in the pre-final. The main event however was a different story for Yu. Trey Brown got around Yu on the opening circuit and held the top spot for the first ten laps. As Brown led, Ryan Schartau moved his way through the field. After Schartau got around Yu on the eighth lap, he set his sights on Brown. Schartau took the lead from Brown on lap 10, and never looked back. Schartau beat Brown to the line by eight tenths of a second. Behind Brown was Yu in third, while Jullian Busick and Dakota Tate filled out the top five.

The Mike Manning Karting PRD Senior Pilot class saw Connor Funk beat Logan Calvin out for the pole by only one tenth of a second. Calvin got around Funk on the opening circuit and continued on to lead every lap of the pre-final. Calvin stayed perfect in the main event, as he led every lap of the 18 lap main. After starting in second, Karlee Polon fell to Stephen Wetterau with less than two laps to go. Wetterau finished the main in second place, behind Calvin. Polon held off Funk as she came home in third place. Connor Funk finished in fourth, ahead of Michel Manning in fifth place. Elric Navatel swept the day in the Valley Trophy Rotax Senior Pilot class. Behind Navatel was Troy Hooker, and Steven Novikoff completing the podium.

As the theme of perfect weekends continued, all other drivers who completed the ‘sweep’ paled in comparison to Tony Kart driver Paul Bonilla’s perfect day. Bonilla routed his competition as he scored a truly perfect weekend in the Phil Giebler Racing.com PRD Grand Masters class. Bonilla out-qualified Steve Hansen by over half a second. From there, Bonilla went on to lead every lap of both the pre-final and the main event. Bonilla dominated in the main event, as he beat second place driver John Bush to the finish line by nearly thirteen seconds. Coming in as the point leader, Ron Rossetti finished in third while Sean Brazeau and Steven Jasinski completed the top five.

Dante Yu may have fallen short in the KPV 1 race, but he made up for it in the OTK Kart USA TaG Cadet race. Ryan Schartau beat out Yu and Gary Lyles for the pole in qualifying. Schartau led every lap of the pre-final. Yu held second the whole race, while Jonathan Shone drove from fifth to finish third in the pre-final. After a poor start that saw Yu fall to sixth on the opening lap, Yu stayed calm and drove through the pack, taking the lead back from Schartau on lap 12. Yu led the final six circuits on his way to the TaG Cadet victory. Schartau held off Shone for second, while Joseph Daniele and Jagger Jones came home fourth and fifth.

Coming in to round five, Rylee Martinez was the point leader in the Pure Karting.com Comer Kid Kart Class. Martinez looked to increase her point lead over Dominic Gorden as she grabbed the pole position in the combined Kid Kart class. Chance Gibson, third place in the point standings, qualified behind Martinez in second. A poor start in the pre-final for Martinez looked to shake the young driver as she fell from the first to fourth after the green flag. Cole Keith led the first three laps before Martinez retook the lead and the win. The main event saw Martinez lead Cotham nearly the whole race. Coming to the white flag, Martinez lost the lead to Cotham, and then another three spots after contact with a lapped driver. Cotham would hold on during the final lap to score the victory. Dominic Gorden came home second, with Jake Daniele finishing third. Gibson finished fourth, while pre-final winner Martinez finished in fifth place in class. The new HPD Kid Kart Class has showed great participation with increased entries each event. Jaden Goetz came into the weekend sitting in second place in the standings, behind Kasey Gillis. Goetz secured the pole position ahead of Gillis by over a second and a half. The pre-final saw Gillis and Goetz swap the lead several times, with Goetz coming out on top winning the pre-final with Gillis finishing second. Gillis get around Goetz to lead the opening three laps of the main event until Goetz got around back around on lap four and never looked back. After Gillis fell out of the race with three laps to go, Dylan Johnson inherited second place. Camden Goetz finished third with Noah Warren and Skyler Geczi in fourth and fifth.
Andrew Murowatz recorded yet another perfect weekend as he swept the day in the Empire Karts KPV-2 class. Murowatz out-qualified Jonathan Eshom by nearly three tenths of a second. Murowatz led Jonathan Eshom for the whole pre-final while Bryce Murphy finished in third, heading into the main event. The 18-lap race went about as straight forward as possible with Murowatz leading every circuit. Eshom held strong in second the entire race with Lindsey Freier, Bryce Murphy and Erin Kistler rounding out the top five. Racing ahead of the KPV-2 drivers were the MACK Motorsports PRD Junior 2 racers. Jacob Drew got the party started in the PRD race as he grabbed the pole position over Nathan Seegrist. The pre-final would go to Seegrist, who came back in the main event to lead all 18 laps as the fight for second place took place behind him. Nick Ramirez climbed from fourth place to run second from lap two to lap nine. Willy Axton held the second spot for the next two laps, before Ramirez took the spot back and held it till the end. Pole winner Jacob Drew finished in third, with Zach Arthur finishing fourth, and Skylar Estrada rounding out the top five.

Pulling double duty, Paul Bonilla also raced in Spec PRD Senior presented by RLV. Bonilla earned the pole position in qualifying over fellow double duty driver Alejandro Fernandez. Fernandez got around Bonilla coming to start lap five, dropping Bonilla to second. One lap later, point leader Lloyd Mack would get around Bonilla for the second spot as Fernandez took the win. The main event belonged to Mack as he got around Fernandez at the start, and went on to lead the remainder of the race. Fernandez ran all 18 laps in second place. Eric Molinatti finished the final in third place, with pole sitter Bonilla behind him in fourth. Robby Stanovich completed the top five.

A full field of 19 drivers competed in the Pitts Performance Junior 1 category on Sunday. In qualifying, Johnny Dressler barely edged out point leader Ryan Schartau by nine hundredths for the pole position. In the pre-final, Schartau got around Dressler and proceeded to lead the first two laps. Coming from third, Joseph Daniele led the middle portion of the heat race, before Schartau took the lead back for the final three laps, giving him the win. Schartau set the tone early on in the main event. Trey Brown hung tight to Schartau, eventually getting around him to lead lap 12. Schartau would regain the lead the next lap, and earn the main event victory. Daniele got around Brown for second with three laps to go dropping Brown to third place, finishing in that order. Johnny Dressler finished the day in fourth, with Colin Queen rounding out the top five.
